Found this by accident. Here is a 48 minute YouTube video of someone totally destroying a Buck NightHawk just to see how much punishment it could really take. Interesting but kinda creepy at the same time with the tester wearing what looks like a goalie mask. I think the knife held up pretty well considering. I can't see anyone devoting 48 minutes of their life to actually watching the whole thing but you can skip thru it and get all the test highlights pretty quickly.

I watched most of the video, the knife being tested is the old model night hawk. That knife is discontinued. I would like to see the new Tops Buck night hawk taking a beating like that, maybe it would revive my interest in the knife. Over all the video sucked but the info was interesting. Thanks Roger

That video pretty much confirmed my hunch, my early model nighthawk is definitely a keeper! One tough knife!

From what I was able to search there appears to be no difference in the steel of the new Tops/Buck Nighthawk vs. the old Buck Nighthawk. Both are 420HC. I would be curious to find out if the holes in the Tops version make it a weaker knife. Or is the heat treatment any different?

I watched the high points of it. I think it performed very well. I don't know when I need to chop cinder blocks with one but good to know I can I guess.

The 1995 Buck catalog lists the steel for the NightHawk as 425.

No mis print, they were 425mod for the first few years, oddly after Buck had already dropped 425 mod for the other models. Maybe it had something to do with this model being tested back then in some Navy Seals trials...it wasn't selected however, but remains a very viable all purpose survival/defense knife in my mind...

Haebbie asked the same question at an earlier time than me as to the 425mod steel, joe expressed an interest in this, but never returned with further info. The packaging Haebbie shows in his pics in the linked thread clearly show 425mod steel, so the steel was claimed to be 425 in both catalog and package literature, Record keeping of such things was definitely not a priority Back then, but the steel on my 650C sure seems to "feel" to me to be 425 by how it reacts on my stones...
