Buck Nighthawk - value?

Fellow Buck Accumulators,

I have two Buck Nighthawk first productions, one with a bead-blasted finish and one with a dark coated finish. The knives are both numbered below 500 and have display stands with plaques. I paid $40 and $45, about the same price as a regular retail at Wal Mart.

Do these have any additional value because of the first-production stamps? Or are they of limited interest because they aren't that old? I haven't seen any in The Cutting Edge, except for the one I bought, so I don't have a good value reference. Ideas? Anyone?

If there was nothing special about those first 500, then there won't probably be any serious increase in value during your lifetime due to the high volume of production. However, you grandkids may profit from your collection.

I think the knives have a great feel to them and I like the idea of having some of the first ones made, so they're definitely permanent keepers for me. You're right about the quantity of production; I think every knife store and Wal Mart in the country sold them. Is there any resources available from Buck or other knifemakers with knife production counts? I know carmakers make those figures available...

The first 500 are numbered on the blade like this: "380/500". But other than that and the display stand, they are identical to the regular production models. But the numbering is the only difference between most first-production and regular-production knives.

As far as grandkids, I don't know who will benefit from my collection since I greatly dislike children. You'll likely see them in the Cutting Edge 60 years from now!

Thanks for sharing your opinion on collectibility, I think you are probably correct.

Bob,

I can give you production numbers if you would email me. I do think that having a knife from the first production run makes it "more special" than the many others that followed. The question that no one can really answer is how much more and when.
Take care,
