Buck Nighthawk vs. Cold steel srk.

I own a SRK (carbon V) and find it very reliable. My buddy has a nighthawk and finds it great as well. Both are rugged knives.I think it's the apples and oranges argument. Both are great it's more a matter of personal taste.

I choose the Nighthawk (655) for the grip Ergonomics alone. I had a SRK, never felt that good in the hand. Now that I have a PE blade Nighthawk I use it for everything! It has let my Scapper 6 have a break...

I have both and for hard use I like the CS SRK because the blade is thicker for the overall length. I didn't lay the edge back real thin for mostly chopping and hacking duties. The Buck Nighthawk is quicker in the hand and I have not had any problems with camp like duties but I haven't batonned (how come spell check doesn't like 'batonned'?) it yet and I have batonned the CS SRK. Both handles are either Kraton or have a rubber like insert and I have felt some slippage in a CS Trailmaster with heavy torsional forces. When it comes down to it the 'Buck over Cold Steel' argument is pretty valid unless there is a great price difference.

personally i wold go for the Nighthawk only cause i greatly dislike epoxy coated blades. The SRK would be nice if you stripped the epoxy off and cold blued it, i've done that on some CS knives. good luck.

The SRK. It throws better! Also the sheath is great for the price point.

Matador-

i have an older srk with the carbon v steel, never used a buck nighthawk. i use the srk mainly for batoning and i think its slightly thicker blade would give it an advantage there. it's a decent chopper as well, although i use a landyard and choke down a bit to a three finger grip for a little more leverage. it's a good blade.

One more thing to consider is if you want stainless (Buck) or carbon (SRK), and what environment it is to be used in, like sea water. I always thought the Buck was a 1/4 inch, so it should be okay for batoning.

Won't be using it for any batoning, got a hatchet for that. The last i check the SRKs are stainless now to.
