Although I buy lots of different brands of knives most of the first knives I ever got were Buck and I have always liked their knives and found them to be great knives. Were it not for Spyderco my EDC folder would once again be a Buck. But anyway I've always liked the looks of the nighthawk but turned my nose up at it for the use of 420 blade steel, I like Kabars (1095 in general) for fixed blades but after seeing these video reviews I've totally rethought my opinion of the nighthawk and can't wait to get one.

Enjoy Buck fans:

It's worth remembering that there's nothing wrong with 420 - it's a great steel for the money, and a heck of a lot easier to sharpen than the high-end 'wear resistant' steels. In addition, any steel is only as good as its heat-treating. I've heard some stories about people with poorly heat treated S30V blade that won't keep an edge. Prices fluctuate, but S30V is around $15/pound, 154CM and ATS34 area round $12/pound, and 420 is around $2-3/pound. I'll admit that I've become something of a steel snob myself, but 420 is a great workhorse steel - in reality you get a lot more bang for your buck...

Exactly why I like 1095 in fixed blades, but I do like VG-10 folders I've personally never been a fan of 154CM or S30V. I didn't realize 420 could do so well.
