Buck numbering system

It seems to me that there is no ryme or reason for how Buck numbers different models. Am I missing something? Just curious.
 
For the most part, models fit into a series, there is a method to the madness. If you look long enough it will come to you.
 
Go to Buck's website and the knives are listed in order of types and series, from that you will see what they do.
 
There are a few confusing anomalies in Buck's numbering system.

The following three posts to this interesting thread show numbers that have given me the fidgets in the past (111, 186 and 316).

Both of these locking folders carry the tang stamp "111" and yet they are not identical in appearance:

And, to continue the Buck numbering anomalies, same model number stamped onto the tang but very different appearance:

To continue with the troublesome numbers, here is the 316 Talus, notice the Canadian Tire Special in the blister pack (Oyster pack since it cannot be opened by the unaided human hand):




Anyone else have examples of or ever gotten the double clutch shuffle because of odd Buck model numbers?
