Recently, I was short on money and decided to sell my Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker to a friend. I quickly realized that being without a sharpener is not good.
I had a Lansky "DogBone" pocket ceramic stick, but needless to say, it was only good for light touch ups.
I was wondering around in a Bass Pro Shops and found a neat sharpener made by "Smiths". It looked very similar to the Lansky and had fine, medium and coarse stones. The medium was shaped like /\ and made for good serration sharpening. For around $25
I decided to get one. I grabbed it and headed for the checkout. I happened to notice a display of what looked to be the same system, but included a knife!
Upon closer inspection, the same thing, same price, but, it came with a Buck Odyssey 186. I of course
exchanged the one in my hand for the one with the knife. I have a few knives and didn't really need or want the Buck, but hey it was free! I will perhaps review the sharpener another time, but after carrying the knife for some time I am very surprised. It is FRN? handle with partial serrated blade of ? I suspect 420HC as is Buck's current favorite it seems. The blade is ~ 3.25" from the handle to tip with ~ 2.75"
cutting edge. The huge discrepancy stems from the "choil" at the base of the blade. Like on the Spyderco Native. This is a neat feature in my opinion. It does take away some length from the cutting edge, but adds for "choking up" on the blade for finer work.
Also can be very helpful if for any reason the blade folds on you. The choil *should* hit your finger instead of the edge. Opening is accomplished with a
long oval hole, slot? This works pretty well. The knife is tip down and really shines using a Spyderco drop.
It opens smooth, bronze washers and user adjustable pivot keep it that way. The knife includes stainless steel liners of unknown type, and a backspacer of something metal? The backspacer runs the entire spine and also serves as the blade stop. Very tough.
Sorry, I don't know more about the actual properties of steel and such, but the knife came with no information. Liners are pretty thin, but the knife locks up solid, no vertical or horizontal play. The area above the opening cut out is ridged for traction. A fairly deep finger cutout acts as somewhat of a guard to keep your hand off the blade. The butt of the handle has a swell that locks it into your palm. Overall it feels secure. The liner is thin, but seems solid. Weight is
no more than many other tacticals. The only real negative to me is the clip. It works fine, but is very long and very shiny. Too much of an attention getter for someone wearing mostly black. Overall, I am very happy with the knife, it was free so the price is right.
I would still be happy if I paid in the $40 range, but not more I think. This knife completely competes with most CRKT stuff I have seen. I imagine the G10/Ats34 versions are very nice. I am not sure about
availabilty of this FRN version, but if it's cheap, go for it. Also check with Bass Pro Shops in your area. I think this may have been a special Xmas promotion.
It may have been price reduced, I don't know. The model number 186 is from the blade. Thanks for reading my first review here, I am happy to answer any questions I can. Just ask.

Hree is a link to a pic and more info. The knife shown on the 1SKS site lists ATS34 and I am sure mine is not. But for the 1SKS price, buy one now! Link: http://www.onestopknifeshop.com/store/buck-odyssey-1-hcs.html

Yes. The Buck Odyssey is a very nice knife. I have 3 of them - one 181(ats-34), and two 182's(ats-34, carbon-fiber). Great design, ergonomics, and build quality, at a good price.
The tip on the Odyssey is too pointy for my liking, so I widened the tip a little, taking around 1/8" off the tip in the process, and making the edge sweep up a bit at the modified tip.

Also, the Odyssey shown at the 1SKS link provided by Ironman is model #186, and 1SKS incorrectly
lists the steel as being ats-34. That's wrong. The Odyssey #186 steel is 420HC. The Odysseys #181 and #182 have ats-34.

Great review, Ironman, of one of my favourite knives.

I thought something was up. I knew mine was definately not ATS-34.
