OK,
I was down at Wally World doing the buy-the-store-out-for-the-grand kids with my wife tonight. I saw a Buck knife on clearance priced at $17.00.....so........I HAD to buy it. :D The box says Odyssey B-186-FL-0T. The tang stamp is in the middle of the blade and says Buck/186 (and an inverted T)/U.S.A.
Can anyone tell me what this knife is? I can't find it in the Buck catalog I have, nor on their web site. What kind of steel is it? It has a needle point, & I now have a bald spot on my arm (nice & sharp). The blade is as thick as some of the tactical folders I have seen from other makers. The scales are black & seem to have a texture to them, might be Zydel or something similar. There seems to pattern to the texture like a coarse cloth, but I think it is on the outside and not from actually from inside like micarta.
I am sort of new Buck collecting as I have been concentrating Schrade since they went out of business.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dale

I see it in their 2004 catalog, so it must of been dropped at the end of the year. As you said, it isn't in the 2005 catalog. Not sure how many years it was made, but I'm guessing maybe 3-4. The steel was Buck's basic 420HC. The handles we're textured thermoplastic. Maybe the search function here will yield more info. Nice find.

I ran a Google search for Buck Odyssey 186, and here are the results, if you're interested. Included in that search is a "review" that is on BladeForums.

Watch the liner-lock on that one, I had one and my nephew did also and it took only the smallest impact on the back of the blade to make the lock fail on both.

That may be the reason why the Odyssey was discontinued.

This guy is selling that knife for $92CDN!!!
According to an online exchange site, about $78.00 US. The knife is nice, but not that nice.

Thanks for the info guys. It is helpful.

I felt the need to bump this up to the top with my own 2¢. Odyssey was the first Buck Knife I ever owned and its never let me down. I'm pretty unhappy that they discontinued it. Pretty soon I'll be buying one of the upgraded ones with the ats-34 blade just to see how it handles since there are a few left on ebay from some vendors.

i have also owned this knife and can attest to the lock failing.
its a nice blade if you treat it like a slipjoint. the liner lock slides like a greased weasle in pipe(???)

not that i would know........never mind.

That's so true! And it would be sound advise to procure the ATS-34 version instead of the "standard" Buck Steel. To me the ODDY rocks! IMO, it would have been great news if the now long discontinued false edge model was made standard grind for all versions. But hey, that's just my opinion.

I liked it, but I also noticed the lock was not perfect. The angle of the contact area on the tang looked like it was more than necessary.

It was a really cool design. The handle and blade were curvy pieces intersecting that looked all artistic, but also happened to make a good hand shape.

I really like the Odyssey.
I have four: 3 182's (CF, ATS-34), and a 181, similar to the 186 but with ATS-34. I use the 181 and one of my 182's. Their locks work fine, no problems whatsoever. But I guess some bad ones slipped through; it seems to happens with all knife companies.
Too bad some of you guys have had bad experiences with your Odysseys.
Send your bad knives into Buck; they'll make it right.

I had one a few years back. I really liked it. I chose it over a CS Voyager because the pocket clip was not so stiff on the Buck. Then one evening I was "Judo" flipping a trash bag into a dumpster and I guess it snagged my Odessy. By he time I noticed it was missing, th e dumpster was empty. I have carried a Voyager for the last three years.

P.S. A couple of years ago I met someone who found an Odessy on the street (in another town). I would watch that knife, the clip may be a little weak.
