I have a plain edge Buck Odyssey with an ATS-34 steel blade.
The box is marked ODYSSEY I B181-FL-0 CAT. 2712.
My question: Is this knife rare or limited?
I have a book that says "A deluxe version with an
ATS-34 steel blade is available only with the
partially serrated edge."
Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Those knives were DCed a while back. The normal run was of 420HC steel, so the one you have must be an upgraded steel version. As far as being rare, they pop up now and then on some of the auction sites. I would use it and be thinkful you have a really good knife in your pocket.

Best of luck,
John

if memory serves, the ats-34 versions were offered some back as a deluxe version, like the book said, of the odysseys and were slightly higher in price. im pretty sure they were offered in plain and serrated edges both so i think the book was wrong about that. im pretty sure the ats-34 versions are not offerd anymore but can occasionally still be found on ebay. they dont seem to have much collector value yet but im sure someday they will.,,,VWB.

Does anybody know how many plain edge Odyssey's with ATS-34 were made?

Thanks

The Odysseys were introduced in 1998 and there were four versions; the 181FL which had a molded plastic handle and ATS-34 straight edge blade. The 181FX had the same handle but a serrated ATS-34 blade. Both blades were chamfered. Some of these original Odysseys used a .050" thick liner until some product redesign was done. The model 182 Odyssey used G10 handles and ATS-34 steel and was available in either straight or serrated edge, both versions having chamfered blades.

In 1999, we reintroduced the Odysseys with more of a sgemented product approach. There was the 186FL whcih used the same molded plastic handles as the original 181, but the blade was 420HC stainless, was straight edged only and had no chamfer. The 181FX used molded plastic handles, and ATS-34 blade that was serrated but not chamfered. The 182CF used carbon fiber handles and ATS-34 blade that was serrated and chamfered. The products were now positioned as good, better, best, creating a family of products.

In 2001, the 182CF was discontinued and the 186FX was intorduced; the 186FX using the same handle and blade as the 186FL, but having a serration. The 186FX was actually intorduced in Wal-Mart before appearing in the catalog.

Don't really know how many of each of the different variations were built and sold; of the straight edged ATS-34 181FL's, probably a couple thousand max., as they were officially built for only about a year. The largest sellers were the 186FL and the 186FX.

Buck Knives

I knew there was a reason I liked Buck Knives so much.
Thank you Mr. Keys, that was very informative.
I like knowing the history of the knives I collect.

Thank you.

That knife is the best pocket knife made in my opinion. I have carried one for close to ten years, and think they were the best thing ever.

I have a couple with the serrated edge and I do not care for the serrated edge, but the plain edge knife is a tops winner.

I am hard on knives as contractor, and I just think that once you get used to the form all the others are either too thick, too slow, or just not ergo enough.

I like the Odyssey too. The blade shape is really nice for every day tasks. My biggest gripe about it is the pocket clip.... it is too "slippery" and weak (on mine anyway) to stay clipped. Also, the clip is mounted a little too low so the knife sticks out of your pocket about an inch. I'm always worried about loosing mine :(

They are pretty readily available APF. I should pick up a few more before they get harder to find.

I think the Odyssey was Buck's best chance to appeal to the Spyderco crowd but it never really caught on.

Does anybody know where I can purchase the Buck 186FX Odyssey? I have had that knife for 17 years and it still works great. It is pretty used and banged up. I would love to have a new one.

Just searched and came across a few serrated and a few non serrated. Decent pricing also.
