Got to head out for some time off in the wilderness with my Buck Vantage Force. Hit up the Rocky Mountain National Park for a trail hike early in the in the morning. While it was cold and early, it was refreshing to hit the trail long before anyone else would be out there. Got to see moose, deer(along with a young 6-8 point Buck), and marmot along the way. Ran into no other hikers, aside from the few folks just starting when we were on our way back, which meant we had the trail to ourselves for the most part. A great diversion from the madness of the world, if for at least a short time.

What was your take-off point (trailhead) for the hike and where were you headed? Since you are in Colorado, how about a 3-4 point instead of 6-8 point.

Ah, I am an amateur when it comes to IDing deer. I remember him being a younger looking one with the antlers having that new "fuzz" on them.

The trailhead was the Colorado River Trailhead to Lulu City. Got to see a couple of the burned out mines and cabins as well as an old mine cart that seems to have been ditched at the base of one of the mines.

"Eastern count" adds both sides of the animals antlers."Western count" is just one side. The "fuzz",to which you refer,is correctly termed "velvet".

We just don't talk knives here,we're "jack of all trades".LOL

I've hunted in the Gunnison National Forest on four occasions in past years.

Thanks for the pictures.

Looks to be a relaxing and enjoyable place to get away. Beautiful scenery and wildlife! Thanks for sharing!

It was. Sometimes, just some quiet time in nature can be better than all the therapy in the world.

Kim, thanks for taking us along for the ride. DM

Thank you David!

Yes! Great pics, that Vantage is a beauty too. Good you got some quality time in!

I love the Vantage series. It is the Buck model that got me back into the brand.

Great pictures.

Appreciate it!

I might be an Idahoan now, but was raised a Iowan. We (as in "my family" at any rate. some of my friends in school used the eastern, others used the western when counting the points) always used the eastern one sided count. I still do.
Saw a really nice 10 pointer (Eastern count) back around '72 or '73. Sadly, it wasn't deer season and I didn't have my shotgun with me. (I only would have taken a shot if I had a deer tag. Many things I may be, but "poacher" is not among them.)
(back then shotgun or archery was the only legal deer hunting tools. Pistol and muzzleloader hadn't been approved yet. Rifles (except shotguns with rifled bore or choke were forbidden. Most deer hunting in Iowa is on farmer's fields. A centerfire rifle's range is "too great" to use, since a hunter might accidentally shoot a bovine, farm house, or out building down range, if s/he missed the deer. As far as I know, the only rifles allowed in Iowa now are muzzleloaders of at least .45 caliber. That's was the rule when I left Iowa for good back in '88.)
Looks like a nice area you were hiking in. :)

I use the total count for whitetail and one sided for muleys...IDK what is the approved and accepted way of counting.
