Hi my name is Helen, I don't know anything about knives, I know a guy who's set to deploy. He sais he used to have a buck stock knife, which was lost on a previous deployment, I am going to surprise him w/ a new knife. Here are my questions, He said it was old & had a carbon steel blade which he liked, & a castrating blade which he misses. What does he mean & do buck, or case, sell anything like it? We have a buck dealer here, but I saw they are 420hc(?), I'm not interested in a chinese made version. Case is still made in the US, right?
By the way you should see all the guys at the office move to the other side of the conference room when he said he misses his castrating blade.

Welcome to BFC!

First thank your friend and tell him to stay safe.

Case should have a stockman in CV which will make him happy.

I will try to post later this weekend on the models, just do not have a catalog handy. Maybe someone else does.

Yup found some models here.

P.S. all current Case knives are made in the U.S.
They have made some kitchen stuff in Japan and some folders in Germany in the past, but not now that I know of.

Welcome Helen. You've come to the right place for advice. I'm not the one to provide it though. Best wishes to you and your friend.

Helen-
Here is another page of Stockman knives by Case. He sells both the stainless and the CV versions. The best to you and your friend!

hi helen, i'm fairly new to serious knife collecting but think i can offer a couple of helpful hints. by "castrating blade" your friend is probably referring to either a spey or sheepsfoot blade. the stockman pattern knife is usually 3 bladed; the longest blade is a clip, the other 2, a spey and sheepsfoot. Case and Queen are both American companies who make their own knives in the USA. stockmans come in various sizes. personally i like the large stockman, usually 4 inches long closed; big enough to do some serious work, yet carries easily in a pocket. as for stainless vs. non-stainless, Case makes both so read all the info to be sure; Queen now uses D2, quite a hard non stainless steel (but v. stain resistant, and highly thought of). that said, my favorite is a 5 bladed 3 3/4 in. sowbelly stockman (one blade is an awl, useful), a MooreMaker (Texas), but made for them by Queen with 1095 steel, the old all time favorite non stainless steel. i doubt anybody would be unhappy with that knife. good luck to you and your friend, roland

Helen..Please send me his mailing address..I will get one out to him ASAP..Thanks,

A castrating blade is called a spey blade nowadays. I know a girl here who swears by her mini trapper, & only uses that blade. Yeah, I can see how the FELLERS might not like hearing him say his castrating blade is missed. I don't know anything about Buck 1 way or the other, I prefer Case, if you want to save some money, get a soddy (Sodbuster Jr.) in CV ($15). The blade shape is close enough, & there's only 1, not 3 blades.
All the best to him, & you should be congratulated(?) for doing this for him.
I just had a scary thought, I am going to move to NE, after my deployment orders were cancelled, TO TEACH. No one will leave their school system the same, or know how to spell after 1 yr w/ me (ha-ha).

Hi Helen, it sounds like he had a Stockman or maybe a Trapper, since both had Spey blades. There is some confusion if it was indeed a Buck, because no Buck pocketknife has ever had carbon steel blades. Is it possible is was another company?

A current Buck version would be a model 301 and would be 420HC stainless, which Buck heat treats VERY well.

If he does prefer carbon steel then Case knives in CV are great also!

Good luck choosing.

I go for CASE.
Why? In my experience, their quality, choice and keen edge put them ahead of Buck by a considerable margin. I've had QC problems with Bucks(not the Chinese ones ironically)and this concentrates the mind....

Well, we drafted a young man who just started at our office into telling John he is just starting out hunting. After asking his advice on equipment, it became apparent 1st that John pcks only 15lbs of equipment for a 2wk hunt in N central PA, & 2nd that what he thinks of a good hunting/pocket knife is tiny by all estimates. He explained to our draftee that the biggest blade you need is around 4" & the perfect knife in his opinion is the "Moose pattern". To make a long story short that is what I've ordered for him. Thank you for your assistance.
On another subject, I would like to ask that you keep all our military young men & women overseas in your prayers.

John ... thinks of a good hunting/pocket knife is tiny by all estimates. He explained to our draftee that the biggest blade you need is around 4" & the perfect knife in his opinion is the "Moose pattern". To make a long story short that is what I've ordered for him.

Can you be more specific? WHICH Moose did you get him?

I bought him the 6.5 handle model.

I apologize for being a dolt, HMC, but I'm still unsure what knife you got him. :o From what company, I mean. Sorry ...... I'm not trying to be a pain, I'm just genuinely curious.

BTW, I think this was a heck of a nice gesture.

Helen,
It is wonderfull thing that you did for your fellow worker. I'm sure he will treasure it and have a great story to tell his fellow soldiers.

That was mighty nice of you - nothing like having a bit of home in your pocket when you're deployed all over the world. It truly does make a difference when you're a million miles away!

Not that I know for sure what she got, but Case makes the 6.5 Bonestag Moose.

Yes, it's a 6.5 bonestag by Case, the (CV) is only available in Canada as a special run. Here in the US it's only available as (SS). I don't know who the distributor is up there, a Canadian girl who does research for her Masters degree had her dad get it & mail it to me, then I reimbursed him.

You're a good friend, and I commend you for taking care of your bud. I would get him a large stockman, if thats what he wants. As said before, the 301 is made in the US, and of 420HC steel, which will be fine for utility use in camp and on the hump, and will be easier to sharpen. Case knives with CV steel are very good, but I'm so-so with their ss steel. Walmart only carries the Chinese made versions, which are pretty good in their own right, but I like the fit better on the USA made ones. I have only seen the Buck US made ones in one sporting goods shop, family owned. I'm sure you can get them anywhere, but a good place to look would be the family owned sporting goods shops. As for Case, most hardware stores like ACE or mom and pop stores should have them.

I see you settled on the Moose. That should serve him well over there. Now c'mon guys, lets see what he can use as a sharpener out in the field? Helen, does he have a sharpening stone?
