Does anyone know if Buck made a whittler in a 301 or 303 size - 3.5" or so. I have seen the 309/310 smaller whittler, but am looking for a larger version. THX

Welcome to the Traditional forum justzukies! I did a little search on whitttlers over in the Buck forum, and the 310 is the only model that came up. I don't believe that they ever made a larger version of a dedicated whittler.

Given Traditional a chance to answer. Let's try the Buck Forum. The home of all things Buck.

Sorry Frank, was teaching knot tying at a fishing clinic for 150 4th graders. Out on a small lake, with cold front blowing in. Some parents ought to be whipped for sending kids to school in shorts and T-shirt on a outside day when they could easily check the weather. I had a thick coat and stocking hat on and I was freezing with the north wind coming off the water. But all that's another story.

Nope, 310/309 only one with the specialized factory blade. Give me a grinder and couple of minutes and a 301/303 sized whittler would appear.......you could have a main clip blade and nice thick sheepsfoot and a nice 'cut-off' pen blade.

Lol,Craig you're a brave man! I tried teaching a few kids basic horse riding skills and some got dropped off by their parents with nothing but T shirt, shorts and flip flops for shoes.I think the 301 is about as close to a whittler knife that Buck makes.I've used mine for just about everything.

So what defines a "whittler"? From what I've observed the blades mentioned, are relative to the body size and are primarily stockman style. Craig is on it. Find the body size that fits and feels good in your hand and rework the blade(s) down to the size and configuration desired for the "whittling" application. Older 301's and 303's can be easily scrounged for cheap on the bay, especially if the blades have been abused. Get a couple as sacrificial prototypes and have at it! Just don't show up in T shirt, shorts and flip flops when the old guys are around....

A "whittler" is a specific type of traditional folder. I am not an expert, but based on what I've read, it has these features:
- main blade is opposite two small blades
- main blade "splits" the two small blades
- "split spring" construction
I feel I may be missing one key detail, but here are some photos from another thread:

Here is a photo of the Buck 310 whittler, from our moderator 300 Bucks :)

The 310 is not a true whittler pattern in the sense that it has 3 springs total, and the main blade seems to be off to one side (I don't own one).

However, as stated, you can whittle wood with all sorts of knives.
