Hey All,
I have a Buck/Strider SBTG Tarani Police...Love the knife. Had got one when they came out but gave it to my Son while he was in IRAQ. I got another for me and really haven't used it. I pulled it out the other day and was talking on the phone while opening and closeing the blade. I (without thinking) used my thumb to put pressure on the spine and the Darn thing popped closed. I did this several times with little effort. I looked at the Linerlock and it doesn't look wright. I took a couple of pics. I was wondering if I could send it to Buck even though it is discontinued? What do all think??? Thanks ~kevin~

Doesn't look like it is poppin over far enough Kev.Send it back to Buck. These do have a reputation for lock failure tho i've just heard the rumblings and dont know the details.

...I have a 298 Sirus that shows the exact same condition except that it wedges so tight against the very beginning edge of the taper on the blade, after opening, that it's incredibly hard to move it back to close the blade. So hard that at times you need something like a piece of wood to push the liner back to close it. It's already been to Post Falls for surgery, ages ago, but the condition remains and it's been in the box unused since then...:(...I'll try to post some pics tomorrow when the sun comes up...

Too Tight! Too Lose! The one that went to IRAQ with my Son was there for two tours and according to him was Flawless in every way. Thank God for the little things I guess. I just sent an email to Buck regarding the problem. I assume I will hear from in the next few days. We'll see????

...I gotta add that I have 2 other 298GY's, a couple of 296GY's, and a 297 (that I paid $13.00 NIB for...:p)... that are all PERFECT...:)

Weird how the oddities and fitting issues (however rare) appear largely on the (subjectively) nicest version of the folder. Buck will make it right I'm sure, it's just odd that the SBTG is the super nice and seems like the one with the more frequent problems.

I've yet to see a problem with the 889(my cheapo beater do-it-all), the 882 SBT(sweet knife) nor the 420HC blade police (887?)

Thanks for your son's service.

I bought a Tarani model in FRN and 420 18 months ago. I had the same problem, the dealer said he would replace it, then refused. Buck replaced it promptly - great service - with one that did exactly the same. It fails to stay locked under mild hand pressure.

Thin stainless liners on stainless blades have little friction or galling to hold the lock in place. The Buck Mayo TNT has no problem with it, a Ti framelock seems to have the better combination of features necessary.

And the original, a Strider SnG, also has no problems. I have heard or seen very little difficulty with the better grade ATS34/G10 model of Buck, lots of happy owners there. Apparently the lesser models are value engineered too much.

I had hoped this would have remained "old news" about earlier production, but maybe not. Send your knife back and you should get good service.

I have 2 Buck Tarani Police models and both liner locks go over about 1/3 of the way when opened. I have had no failures but will admit I have not used them very hard.
It would be nice if they used the big ole frame lock like the Strider SNG they were modeled after, but they don't cost $400 either. Probably another case of you get what you pay for, but I intend to use mine and will hope they hang together. It is curious that liner locks seem to run the entire gamit. I have some that seem to barely hit the blade and some that go 3/4s of the way over, even with the same brand/model knife.

Mine was like that, so I unscrewed it, and filed down the liner-lock till it engaged EXACTLY where I wanted it.
At least with too much liner, the fix is easy.
