I saw in another post, where the poster referred to a Buck "post 1968."

I have a Buck Special that my girl friend gave to me in 1967. On the left side of the blade it is marked "Buck, USA." What is the significance, if any, to "pre-1968"??

Thanks. L.W.

Leanwolf,
In approximately 1968 (perhaps 1967 on some models), Buck added the "U.S.A." to the tang stamp. These knives are also referred to as two-liners (BUCK / U.S.A.). One liners, of course, were stamped "BUCK". Then in late 1971, Buck began to add model numbers to the stamping and these are called three liners. Some of us call the 1986 and later models with a year symbol four liners even though they are actually three with the added year symbol after the model #. Remember that these dates are almost always approximate as Buck would have used up existing inventory before starting the new variation.

Thanks, Larry. My "Special" must have been one of those that was stamped with the "two liner" earlier, as I received it for my birthday in Aug. 1967.

Lean,
The exact date of when we added "U.S.A." is something i have been chasing for quite a while now. It had always been understood that we did not do that until 1968. I recently found a photograph with the developers date of 11/67 on it. August is the earliest i have heard of yet! Of course, i might need to see your birth certificate first before i go and rewrite history!

In any event, it sounds like you have a great knife with lots of sentimental value.

Take care,
