Here is a '81 Buck 301 Stockman model made for the Winchhester Co.
From what I think, there were only about 3000 of these produced between '81 and '82 for a Winchester rep. If any one has other info or further the info I have produced please feel free.

so it is, my mistake. I didn't know they produced a trapper as well as a stockman. Any thing else I need to know about the Buck produced Winchester?

Here's the reply from the late Vern Taylor to me about these knives.

Vern Taylor said:
A really wonderful guy by the name of Jerry Lambert, a Winchester rep, was instrumental in putting this deal together, and you got the story pretty much straight. I believe there were 1000 ordered and something less than that delivered, maybe 900 or so. This is a very desirable knife because you have TWO groups of collectors after them: the Winchester guys and the Buck collectors. Personally, I think it is a $100 knife. Sales don't bear that out but I am firm in my appraisal.

A Winchester 301 was the knife that brought me to bladeforums 10 years ago in April, with my first post! :)

Not sure what you mean by 'go away'. FWIW Winchester is now owned by FN and making very nice firearms in North Carolina. Here's my Extreme Weather Model 70(very much like the pre-64 Model 70) in .308 that I received this January. Preston

So, between the two models there are approx 3000, or 3000 of each model? I have one of the two, but can't remember which...I guess I'll have to go look!

Bet it is a 301....seems the most 'available'.

Yup, it was the Win 301 that put BCCL and I on each others address book. And thanks for the Vern Taylor quote , going into the file.....BCCL be sure to use it when you write the 301 history.........sorry, mean streak due to hot weather.........

Be prepared one of these days I am going say to: you, me or us on that 301 history........300Bucks

Turns out it is a 311 Trapper. I got it in a three knife trade in 2004. I thought the Winchester shield was pretty cool and I hadn't seen one before. I don't even remember what the other knife is that I got in the trade. Am I accumulating too many knives? Not to mention going outside in +90 degree weather to take a picture. I must be sick...in a good way!

Craig,
I have two 301 Winchester shield versions: the early one has the tang stamp BUCK / MADE IN / U.S.A. with 301 on the reverse tang and of course the later three liner. Based upon that, it would seem that Winchester ordered the first batch in about 1971 and then came back later and ordered a second 301 batch plus the 311 models.

The Winchester 301 has always been an bit of an enigma to me. It is obviously a Camillus manufactured knife, so why didn't Winchester simply contract directly with Camillus to make the knife rather than going through Buck? Only thing that I can come up with is that Winchester preferred the Buck stamp on the blade. Maybe Craig or Larry O can add more information here.

When did you get that 1971 one?

The reason I ask, is that after the big Camillus auction, "Winchester" 301's and 311's flooded Ebay for awhile, all virtually from the same seller.

It has made me wonder if they were made later from auctioned Camillus parts, because they were so scarce for awhile, and then just a wave right after the auction.

Well,

Now me and a dozen other people will be carefully looking at the bay 301 Winchesters. I have two of the later ones.

I am working on my SMKW seminar and in the era in question. Most lists are about the same. The Tofts list makes the No scale rivets, Made In USA tang with model number on reverse as 1971-1974. Then the Winchester's pictured above as 1974 -1985. Of course they were made for a limited run not the whole period. The 311 Winchester pictured would have been a post 1974 era. But as Larry will tell you "There is no absolute rule to dates". Special orders like this are usually more accurate in dating than general production.

The Buck blade stamp is a head scratching question, as Tinsue surmises the Buck name on the blade must have carried some marketing weight. It was not a Bos 420HC blade so it was for the name only.......look at this photo, seems Remington may have went the route Tin suggested with this "303 sized" knife.

I am going to start my seminar by taking off my hat and saying "I had hair when I started all this, so be forewarned." 300

I say they (Camillus) ground off Buck, 303,USA and pad printed Remington.......knives made for Cami to sell themselves arre usually straight bolstered. These production run ear of Buck 303s was hugh so Cami probably said to Remington "Hey, have we got a deal for you"

Sorry, was referring to the model 1894. U.S. production was shut down in 2006:o

BTW, when in your 14 thousand plus posts:eek: did you change from "The Last Confederate" to "Bear Claw"?

3-4 years ago IIRC, I was BCCL on virtually every other knife & gun forum I'm on, so decided to make it a clean sweep! :)
