I have a Buck M-9 Bayonet and a Buckmaster that have the typical sheath and sharpening marks on them and after 10+ years of use could use to be freshened up a bit. I've heard you can send them back to buck for a makeover, does anyone have any details or know if this is true?

Thanks,
Brian

That is generally true, for a small fee Buck will do that (or if you have a Pro Line series knife they will do it for free). But given the value of Buck M-9's and Buckmasters these days I think any refreshing or refurbishing could hurt its collector value. Or not. Just something to ponder.

You should consider the effect it would have on colector value for sure but that issue aside, we do, reluctantly, offer a refurbish service for those 2 models.
I'll explain why "reluctantly".
Although its rare, from time to time when one of those older blades are re-bead blasted, it will reveal an as of yet not seen pit in the blade. If that happens, our only option is to try to grind it out or leave it as is.
Grinding it out, if it works to begin with, will alter the original grind lines of the blade.
So far, I have only seen this happen one time. But when you are talking about a collectable knife such as a 184, something we dont have any more of, one time is too many.
We charge a fee and only ask that you understand that this may happen and you have to promise not to hold Buck liable for it if it does.
If I have not completely scared you off, send me an email and I will give you some more details.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Joe, I'll stick with the wear marks and call it character! Thanks for posting the info.

According to a usually reliable source here, a 3M Scotchbrite wheel [on a bench mounted buffer] can be used to remove scratches and restore the "brushed" finish used on some knives... :)

Last time I priced one, they were $34 each, so I haven't tried it yet... :(
