Ok, this is sort of reverse order but I ordered one of these tonight and would like a few opinions and comments. I only have one real question that goes for just about all the Strider folders as well:

Is the cut out in the blade meant to be used like a Spyderhole with/instead of the thumbstud or is it just there for decoration?

That's always bugged me
Thanks for all the help.

it is for one handed opening like the spydie hole. i hope this helps.,,,VWB.

I've become a big fan of the SBMF. It's a big folder (which I prefer) but its flat enough that it carries well in the pocket. If you do a search for SBMF or 889 you'll find lots of threads. Let us know what you think of yours when it arrives.

You can open it via the hole or thumbstuds, the belt and suspenders approach. I find the hole easier to use. The thumbstuds also act as a blade stop when locked open.

yep you're right it's for opening the blade. I had one and just recently traded for another. I really like them. the one complaint i had was that the checkering on the scales could easily be used to file an ax. after losing about 1/4" of skin off the back of my right hand i pulled out the orbital sander and went to town. made it a lot more civilized. don't know if i'd do it again or not. it's a great knive. ahgar

Yep Ahgar...
I agree about the checkering on the 889.
Swaped my 889 frame with a G-10 frame. BIG difference.

Just got it today. WOW. Great quality. Pretty thick but really great fit and finish. Shaving sharp. The checkering is really aggressive but that will just help with gloved use. Thanks for the input guys

Hey Hammer Time...
Glad you liked the SBMF right outta the box.
I love mine too.
The checkering bugged me. Some guys have sanded 'em down. I was lucky enough to get a 882SBTG ATS-34 along with a mint 889 blade. I swapped the blade out and now have a 889 blade w/ the 882 G-10 scales...perfect.

Here's a pic of the two from a recent post: http://mongoose.smugmug.com/photos/209096009-X3.jpg

Keep us posted after ya test drive it a while :)

You guys might like this, all bead blasted hardware and blade. with a slight radius over the entire perimeter of the G-10.

The only thing I find uncomfortable about it is the pocket clip. It just seems to really get in the way. I don't know what I can or will do about it though. I'd also like to see a little bigger version come out.
I added a ziptie wave just to give it a shot; works great but not too comfortable if you choke up all the way due to the fact that it puts your thumb right on a ziptie. I'll have to see where I'll go with that too but I don't think I'll keep it on.

Some thing you can do to help make the pocket clip a Little easier to get in and out of your pocket, is to remove it and lay it flat on a hard surface and lightly hit the peak of the belt clip. You still want the knife to stay in your pocket so you need to check it every time you give it a wack.

Actually, if you have some hand skills like heng em, you can do this mod pretty easily. The whole knife can be taken down to bits with a T-10 and T-6 torx wrench. Remember to look and see which side of the blade each washer goes on before diasassembly (they are two different sizes and thicknesses). Then radius the edges on a belt sander (or with sandpaper) and re-assemble. Lickety split.

I'm currently working on another mirror polished SBMF with a swedged blade. I'll have to see if I can post a pic when it's done.....

Oh one more shocker...no lanyard hole. I'm surprised. This is a "tactical" knife after all; hasn't made me dislike it any more though
