Buck Selector

A friend of mine purchased a Buck Selector with five interchangeable blades and brought it over to show me this evening. I have seen these in the past, and I think they went out of production about 15 years ago. My guess would be that no one that posts here is a big fan of interchangeable blades, but I was just curious if anyone had any experience in actually using one of these. The blades seem to lock in pretty tightly, but I would think that there would be no way that they would hold up over a period of time with regular use.

i am like you,,, seems a great idear!
the idear has been around for over 150 years
i think the selector will stand up as well as the normal buck lite..
you should see the custom 110 selectors that some of the guys have!
wow is not enught... :D

My guess is that we are all fans of interchangeable blades, but the Selectors offered on online auction sites lately have had a really boring selection of blades...

That's my humble opinion... :D

So what was the blade selection originally offered. I have the following: (1) clip, (2) serrated clip, (3) drop point, (4) serrated drop point, (5) splay, (6) gutting, (7) serrated gutting, (8) saw, and (9) hawk bill. I don't know if there are any additional or not, but these are all I have ever seen.

I love the Selector! It used to be my personal carry while in the woods chasing big game. I used the serrated drop point to help quarter up 2 cow elk one year. I really liked having the ability to quickly change the blade to a clip to finish the job. It was very light and was like you were carrying several knives in your pack for the weight of one.
I think that if a person used common sense, the knife should last a very long time. By that comment I mean that if a person were to grab a rock and try to pound it through the pelvic bone of a deer, it might not hold up all that well. Use it for slicing stuff, and it will outlast you. :)
The blades offered were:
1)Clip
2)Partially serrated Clip
3)Drop point
4)Serrated Drop point
5)Gutting
6)Partially serrated Gutting
7)Skinner
8)Hawkbill
9)Saw
I took these names from the Buck catalog and maybe one of them is what you refer to as a Splay blade?

Thanks Joe, my "splay" is your "skinner".

I don't know what most of those even are...but the last Selector I looked at on eBay didn't have the drop, clip, or serrated clip/drop...which pretty much were all I was interested in...

Sorry to annoy you Selector owners/lovers with my comment... ;)

(I'll shut up now)

This is definetely not the best picture in the world but I hope it will do...

The inlays are white micarta and the elk was lasered onto the one side.

I once thought the selector might, just barely, be a good replacement for my 303. But, the online prices are out of site......

Really??? I did a search of completed auctions on Evil Auction Site and had from $49 to $129...not really out of sight...

But it is a plastic handled "Bucklite" clone, so I guess that is high...

Joe has the right idea - a 110 with replaceable blades...I understand Leroy did a nice one not too long ago...

Sorry Guys, nothing in the way of a selector here. I am sure the guys here that have them will kick in. There has been a lot of talk about them over the years.

I have been beaten out on any I have tried to bid on :o, but in actuality, I wasn't trying very hard.

hummm,,,,I seem to recall an old selector type that came out of an estate sale years and years ago. Not a buck. Will see if I can find it.

I remember when the selector was a current model but I didn't like the scale materials offered. I did pick up a Case "XX Changer" some years back when it was on closeout for too cheap to turn down. It has a Drop, Clip, Saw and Fillet blade. Not sure if others were available.

It would be interesting to know if the "selector" or "xx-changer" came first.

I had a knike I bought at wally world for 14 bucks and some change,it was a mossy oak knife with the M O design laser etched out in the blade. It was a nice looking knife and my brother liked it and he had a buck selector that was like new that was given to him,he INSISTED i trade him, well i am now the proud owner of a Buck Selector with 3 blades.I would really like to pick up some different blades, although the 3 i have are OK..I have the skinner, the saw and whatever you guys call the blade that looks like a "normal" knife blade looks like.Oh BTW this is my first post,if you know where i may be able to pick up some blades let me know, thanks in advance.

Just a question on the selector. I know some companies, including Buck, use/have used other manufacturers to make some of their knives. Was the Selector actually made in the California Buck factory?
