Buck Selkirk 863 or something like it?

Hey guys. I've been looking for a survival knife for every day carry. I was looking a the gck in spear point as it seemed like a cool combat survival knife, however in this political climate with everyone being afraid and offended at everything, I was thinking something toned down to look like a redneck hunting knife. I do however like to play with the knife and practice martial arts, so I do like balance. And I do like the ability for my knife to be defensive if need be.

I really like the look of the selkirk 863. I like the flat grind, the 420 hc from buck is supposedly a good steel, though I've only had experience with sog and crkt's aus8 as far as decent stainless steel are concerned. I have had the gerber Strongarm, though that was a beefier knife.

I like the selkirk 863, my concern is that it is a little delicate blade wise. Could anyone tell me more about this knife from personal experience?

Also, if a knife like this one exists by another brand that looks like it, but beefier, I would appreciate the suggestion?

Just for the sake of looking at another potential buy, have you looked at anything by Condor? They make great knives, and sell them with beautiful, thick leathered sheaths.

I like Buck and collect them, but that knife is made in China, and while a decent knife overall and not getting political on where knives are made....my only point is it isnt the same steel or heat treat exactly as the American factory made ones in 420hc.

I always wondered if the China 420HC was different from the American 420HC.

I believe Buck does the best they can to monitor qc, but it isn't the same as watching your own factory and heat treat.

that said, they are using partners who are doing what they're asking or they wouldn't use them. so it's not bad for what it is, but it isn't exactly the same. I dont own the Selkirk, as I'd want a American factory made one, but that's me. I'd have no fear of owning one though. lifetime Buck warranty covers any doubts I might have.

Check out Anza knives. Not pretty, for the most part, but well made, with a good reputation.

Well, if you are afraid of offending anyone by what you carry with you, then don't carry a knife.

If you are concerned that the full tang Selkirk in 420HC is "delicate blade wise", what makes you think that?

420HC by nature is tough, corrosion resistant, affordable and very easy to maintain. I am fond of the stuff for those reasons.

I fail to see what needs you listed that couldn't be fulfilled by the Buck Selkirk that you mentioned.

There's a ton of stuff out there that looks like the Selkirk... but beefier... (and more expensive)... but I doubt you have such a need.

And hey, if it turns out that the Selkirk just isn't beefy enough to handle your endeavours, the warranty should assuage your misgivings.
