I need a knife for military purpose and situations that may occur within service.
My requirements:
Ok, the knife I need does NOT have to be maid of stainless steel. I more appreciate if they are not brittle. I would like a thicker blade with little weight in it...Out there in the field you will not play with food trying to slice it so it looks beautiful, but cut it in pieces that you can put in the mouth.
Good penetration ability through clothing, skin, muscles and ribs without fear of breaking the blade. Good cutting ability through skin, muscles and possible thin clothing and wires. It will keep the edge good and without chipping. Absolut NO serrations along the edge. Serrations on the top can I live with, but not a must. Good grip on the handle, don't want it to rotate in the hand or to slip with my hand along the edge when pushing the blade through something.
I always think of screwdriver...it's much easier to handle one with thicker handle.
Does this knife fulfill my requirements? Anyone who has expirience with it?

My appologies if I have been too straightforward when describing what the knife might be used for...You never know what kind of situation you may get in and I want to be able to rely on that knife.

Thanks,
//bluka94

You will be pleased with the Buck/Simonich...she is light and fast in the hand excellent grip.I have not had a chance to really use mine ,I will have to wait a few more weeks.
The S30V from Buck is a very good steel due to the heat treatment it receives.
Ballistic nylon sheath is not bad either.

Thanks for your answer.
The knife is made of S30V, the same steel like CRK Green Beret. And I saw how it broke in two separate tests, one is on knifetests.com and the other is Cliff Stamp's test. What is the reason for that? Is S30V genaraly brittle steel or it depends on heat treatment?
Don't get me wrong, but i don't have any use of lifetime warranty when i stand in the middle of hand-to-hand combat (God forbid that goes so far) with broken blade in my hand...
I still like how that knife looks and Ireallt do hope that is heat treatman that makes differens between GB and Legacy.
The thing is I'll not use this knife to chop and dig with (thanks God we have axes and spades for that use:D), but use it like a knif should be used - cutting, penetrating, slicing - and generaly self-deffence. The reason I ask if blade is brittle is how would it response i.e. on inpact with ribs...that's my concern...

Thanks,

Thats going to be a great knife!! S30V Bos HT, its gonna rock! Im so glad to see this thing finally happening. Rob is smiling down on this for sure;-)

there is one called pig stidker
it is a full 13 inches oal
the blade is the thickest i have ever seen on a buck
the blade on top front can be stritgeted
i can not imagin it breaking on ribs..
the night hawk grip is supberb!
there is a thread : no more pig stickers ...
check it out... if it wont do ya nothing factory made will!!!
i is not a fixed blade fan.. i only collect the folding hunter in all its verations...
but i like this sticker and if i were going to the sand box i would want THIS on my side..
it is impressive to say the least... i bought a 124 fronteersman to take with me in the navy.. i would rather have had this...
good luck... keep yo head down!
dave - got pig boat? DBF
EDIT: ok i jest looked at the test site...
quite some testing... and rateings..
i would use some of them for diveing were you want a tool you wont break...
the most highly rated ones would also be good for surival ...
i can and will not speak of if the pig sticker would rate as high or not...
as said in these test it is designed to see how much it would take to distroy the knife and how long it will stand up to abuse ... these test are valid .. i guess... that they use a short sword as a symble of rateing that is BullShiving... they should use a broken blade as indication of holding up... the more broke the less it held up..

i have handled the bussie which they have as top rated and it i dont think that much of them they are not a weapon.... they are a tool made of lawn mower blade steel with a high heet treat...
as far as getting one thorugh layers of cloth or leather and not get cought in ribs but has a likely hood of being able to pentrate through the roof of a hummer and baton cut your way out as a tool...
you are saying is that what want is a weapon not a tool ...
so dont put that much in to failure testing of weapon knives...
and high rateings on tool knives..
there is a diffreance...
but it is your arse on the line...
you should choose wisely my son...

non-serrated655006.jpg

651 Nighthawk Hunter (pig sticker)
650 Nighthawk
655 Short Nighthawk.
The first 3 are all 420HC steel, its good stuff ;)
The last 2 are different versions of 639 Field mates. Both discontinued. 425M steel?
The 651 "pig sticker" was a special order knife for an australian customer. They are not a catalog knife and only a limited number were made. They are still available in online auctions but shes huge!
I have a 650 nighthawk and love it! She's very tough! ALL are USA made as well ;)
I believe most are 1/4" thick? Give or take? My 651 hasnt arrived yet so I cant verify that. Good luck, and I hope you don't "need" to use it.

some of them are still made some not...
pig sticker is not...
all are i think 420 hc
the sticker is thicker then the 124 ... i tant seen none the but the 184 and i think it is about the same thickness
as i said i only collects the folding hunter and the hard back knives are other fortay...
the night hawk was listed as a good rateing ... and was mentioned in the chris reves notes as a good knife..
if your life depends on a knife ... do you want a tool or a weapon..
i guess's that depends on why yo arse is on the line...
i is a scuba diver and planed on brown water and would have had need of a tool knife...
never planed on a war in sand...
so as i said could be one of the fixed nuts will come along and have all the data for ya
i have the greatest respect for the aussy's ......
they designed this sticker along proven classical lines,,, not high tech..
and it is a Dayum BUCK Knife to boot! what else can you say...but ...
good enught for me..
but as i said its a yo arse ya is a betting with...
davie in the navy
pig boats were men are men and stink like real men!
dont ever say to the engine room snipes ...
there taint enugh o yo to grease my ...
well mike our leo knows what i was going to say!

I don't have use for Battle Mistress...It's way to big to handle it in a combat. The blade I look for should be 6" at max.
And I don't intend to abuse a knife like he did in those tests...My knife would be use like a knife should - stubbing, cutting, slicing - and generaly self-deffence. The hardiest thing my knife would penetrate is ribs and one and another bone on the way in...And if it can withstand that without breaking..well I don't need better...I just want to be able to rely on my knife, that's all...

Any Buck fixed blade will do ya fine then! The 651 is huge!
Go for the simonich ;)

Nighthawks aint bad either ;)

the sticker may be a tad long then ... the 650 should fit ribs jest fine...
but i still likes that dayuum aussy sticker ... they designed it for combat and it looks like it ....
it jest looks a baaaaad MOFO

I have a 650, 653 and 655 and the blade thicknesses are .236, .238 and .237. I would assume that the 651 is around the same thickness. (Should have bought one)

Ya' know, bluka, the 119 and 120 plain jane versions were quite popular with the men in Nam. I personally know a brave man who's father sent him a 119 for exactly as you describe. The knife came home with him. Used? To be sure. Useful to this day? Absolutley! Just 'cause it is old don't mean it ain't the answer. Food for thought?

Dave

Hey Bluka, how about something that's well proven and designed for the task. The time tested Ka Bar. Pics below show it between the "pigsticker: and the Buck 650. This is the Extreme Fighting model which is D-2 tool steel. Same knife with more chromium in the steel (not quite enough to call it stainless but close) is the Next Generation model.

Good luck...

Thanks, bro!

I've never tought of Ka-Bars, but now I'll check out some of their models.

a kar bar is not what you think,...
Camillus made the first USN fighting knife, because of minor design flaws was returned to the factory and Camillus redesigned the knife. The new design was deemed acceptable, hence the designation "USN Fighting Knife, Mark 2." The USMC version was made by KA-BAR of Olean, N.Y., it became so well known that this style of knife is still called a "Kabar" by army and Marine Corps ground troops, even if it's a cheap "Made in Taiwan" copy.
