I want to buy a new buck skinner. Trying to decide on either buck 103 or buck ergohunter. Any opinions on which one is better skinner.

Buck website Web Specials today has the Gen Five Bone Handle back after an absence and the Gen Five is a popular skinner that would be another possibility.

Don't forget the new 113 as an option for you hunting needs.

Yes, the 113 is another good choice, as are all four.

Depends a lot on hand size and handle size and shape. You should handle them all if you can.

dd, Welcome. The 103 is a great skinner and you can't go wrong with it. Plus, you can do other knife chores with it. What is planned to utilize it on? DM

Size might play a part in your choice, so here's a quick picture of the knives mentioned.
Top to bottom:

Ergo Hunter
103
Gen-5
113

Thanks so far for input. I am a big guy with big hands. Will be used primarily for whitetail sized animals with ocass elk sized.

Then go with the Ergo Hunter in premuim steel as the handle on the 103 is barely enough for me. I need a 1/2" more. DM

I have big hands, the 103 is my favorite skinner.I have a alaskan guide vanguard and its nice, but not a great skinner like the 103.The ergo i don't have so i can't make a positive or negative comment on.The small gen 5 is also a great skinning knife, just a little small for me ,but still works great!I would seriously consider the 103 for all your skinning needs.I've even skinned out cattle with mine at my friends farm when he owed me a side of beef i literally picked mine out then walked it to the slaughter house and did all my own work by hand. The only change i'd like to see on the 103 would be a better steel than 420hc,its good but bg-42,s30v,440c,d2 is better.

I require a size large work glove and the model 103 barely fits my hand. I've used mine on a large steer as well only it's blade is of 440C. Which I really like. It's a great skinner and I wouldn't trade for it. Mine has the edge 2000 grind and this makes it perform better. This model has been offered in S30V, it was of the 800 series knives. The 803 which was a Real upgrade, from handle to sheath. Buck even gave it a lanyard hole. Does someone have a photo of one? DM

Yeah, the Ergo handle looks to be a lot bigger than the rest.

I think you can get it with a "Special" steel, too.

I am leaning towards 103. I found a friend who has ergo. I am left handed and it does not feel right.

dd, You won't be disappointed with the 103.
Plumber, Thats it. Thanks for posting it. The sheath that came with that model was also first class. Plus, it had a checkered walnut handle with a lanyard and the blade was polished. Man, DM

Yes, they are. I was merely not repeating that part of post 12. Plus, that variation on the 103 has a full tang, self guard and a roomy handle. Thanks, DM

I've always been fond of the traditonal blade profile of the 103 however the 113 is perfectly adequete skinner and offers a bit more utilitarian blade profile as well. Also the 102 woodsman is a nifty little knife and a serviceable skinner.
