Hi,

I gave my Wife my last Stockman, a RR. So I need a new user slip joint. I looked at a new stock Old Timer, The RR is a better knife.

I know the Buck is made in China, but it looks to be at least as good the RR, if not better made. Is the Buck a decent user knife for everyday use and a bit of whittling?

Thanks!

If it's got Buck stamped on the tang, it good. But you can still get the 303 and 301, made here in the U.S. A bit more money, but maybe worth it.

Having used them over the last 40 years, I can tell you first hand these are some very rugged working pocket knives!

Like jackknife said, the 301 and 303 are still made in the US. I have a 373, and it is a very high quality knife. Buck doesn't put the name on junk, and the import line is not an exception to that. They are even backed by Buck's warranty. Either way, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Another good option for you may be buying a used Schrade 340- they are still out there and are quite affordable.

Buck makes two stockman patterns in the US, the 301 and the 303.

The 303 is smaller than the 301.

I have an old 303 from about 1980, which I think was made by Camillus for Buck. I carried it on a daily basis for a number of years. Very good user.

Just got a Buck 301. Nice knife with good fit and finish, though it did not come very sharp. Buck does a nice job with their 420HC steel. According to the information on the AG Russel web site, Buck runs its steel a couple of points higher in hardness than Case does.

Not surprised about the Old Timer. Schrade is gone. Old Timers are gone. That there's still stuff coming out of China with "Old Timer" and "Schrade" stamped on them is an abomination.

Now, about Bucks ....... get yourself a US-made 301 or 303. Can't go wrong.

I'm a big fan of the Chinese made Bucks. I've had both the 303 and the 373, and in my case at least, the 373 was way better quality. Anytime anyone wants to try a chinese made knife as a beater, I recommend Buck.

Why don't you get a Case cv or a Queen Stockman from D2?That way you don't have to send money to China. Most people don't realize that a lot of our oil problems is because China is using so much now.If you keep having them import their products the cycle continues.

mmarkh,

We don't get into the politics, pros and cons of international trade with China here in this forum. (We do have political and current events forums that are appropriate for that discussion.)

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I would dearly love a Case CV, but they are a bit more than I wish to spend for a day-to-day knife. I would fear losing it or doing something bad to it. I'm hoping to get one for Christmas though. It would be a fine thing to have in my pocket for a "Sunday go to Meetin'" knife. :) I wish I had back those Old Timer knives I lost over the years:(.

Thanks Guys! All the advice and knowledge here has really, really helped me make better buying decisions!

Edited to say Thank You to Blues for the gentle and timely reminder!

Not only that, but not all Bucks are made in China.
The 30x series is made in Idaho. This has been pointed out already in several posts above, but apparently those posts were not read by all.

(Sorry for the continued argument, give me demerits if you must, but the entire comment was based on a false premise. Shutting up now.)

No need for "demerits" knarfeng, but there's a time when the gracious thing to do is stop flogging the dead horse and move on. An apology was offered and now it's that time.

I've got at least one of every imported model, except the new Canoe and small Toothpick, and use them alot. I think if you give one a try you'll be happy, mine have held up just fine and seem an aweful lot like Buck's USA made ones.

My experience with Chinese made Bucks has been good. Buck doesn't put their name on junk, though I must wonder, are the Chinese made knives Bos heat treated.
The Chinese Schrade/Old Timers seem about on par with Rough Rider, in my limited experience. I wouldn't buy an Old Timer or Schrade made in China though. There are RRs, which have always been made in China, and Bucks, some of which are still made in the US and some of which are now imported. Old Timer/Schrade, it would be insulting to buy a RR standard knife with the name of that once great company on it.

Also, the Case CV may not be so far out of your price range. You can get them for $25-$35, in yellow handles. This one is my favorite pattern, the Medium Stockman
http://eknifeworks.com/webapp/eComm...t=&Mode=Brand&PriceStart=&Brand=23&SKU=CA3318
but there are many others, Peanut, Mini Trapper, Trapper, Barehead Slimline Trapper, Pen Knife, Sodbuster Jr.

A Case CV in Yellow Delrin is a very similar price to a US made Buck in Delrin.

neeman is right. Why wait till Christmas? If you're not averse to bidding on a popular internet auction site that shall not be mentioned, you can generally pull one in for about $25 shipped.

IMHO the Case cv stockman is a superior knife to the Buck and the price difference is minimal.I would take Case CV steel over 420HC any day.

Looking at both of them...
Both are solid workers.

The Buck has the hollow ground blades, which makes it much easier to sharpen. The F&F is better.
The Case is more classic with brass liners, and its blades are wider; definitely prettier. The F&F is 'soft round the edges'.

I also would choose a Case CV over a Buck.

Happily I don't have to!
