Buck Solitaire VS Bucklite 424

I am interested in feedback on the Buck Solitaire vs the discontinued Bucklite 424. I see three different Bucklite 424s that are listed as NEW on the BAY, so I think we could compare both models in new condition. These knives are both about 3 7/8" closed.

What I see is that the 424 model is a lockback that is lighter and has a drop point blade which is longer than the blade in the Solitaire. The Solitaire has the traditional stockman clip blade and it does not lock. But that Solitaire sure is pretty compared to the black plastic handle of the 424.

So, can I get some feedback in opinion and actual use?

I believe the 424 is based on the 501 and is slimmer than my 422. That would make it more comfortable to pocket carry even though it should come with a sheath. The lockback makes it sturdier and safer in most cutting applications as compared to the slipjointed, 302 Solitaire. The Solitaire might be more comfortable in the pocket, just got my 302 Solitaire and have not carried it much. As with all knife buying decisions you must decide what are the uses that will apply to the knife. HTH, good luck in your decision. Preston

I like both knives for different reasons. The 302 is certainly much more slim in the pocket. The 424 has the back lock, though. I think I would buy the 424 since they do not make them any more. It probably has 425M steel, too (I think). 302s are inexpensive (about $23) so you can always get one of those at a later time.

Another comparison pic. My 501 Squire, 424 Bucklite and 302 Solitaire. They are close in length, but the Solitaire is slightly longer by close to 1/4" (give or take) and it's mostly in the handle. It's basically a full 4" closed. The handle is slim, but the length feels good in the hand. The cutting edges are pretty much the same length.

You really can't go wrong with any of these. The 501 was one of my first and still one of my favorites. The 424 is perfect for a little less weight in the pocket. Late to my game came the 302 Solitaire, but it has vaulted to my NO. 1 EDC. I do carry several knives, but this is always one of them. No, it doesn't lock. Yes, the blade is a little shorter than the frame. But, it's the unique features and the beautiful Rosewood handle scales and the attention to cutting rather than poking so it doesn't close on my fingers that make me love it so much. I like not having a half stop and I find myself opening and closing this knife repeatedly when I am nervous or thinking or just plain bored.

I like the solitaire better, you can carry it almost anywhere and nobody gets worked up over it when you use it.

I carry a larger locking folder too, I just use the slip joint 90% of the time.

For more traditional my favorite is the 501 the 424 444 and 484 are all practically the same as the 501.
I like the feel of the 444 and 484 better than the 424, and dont like slippies at all.

I second the 444......the 424 must have been a cheaper replacement or something.....it just doesn't feel right.

The 444 was my go-to knife for deer hunting in my last few seasons and it will gut out a big buck as well or better than any other knife.
