I posted this on the buck knives forum, but not as many peoplea re there. So I thought I'd ask here.

I have a buck solo that has a T with the bottom pointing to the left (I'm told this is the 2005 stamp for knives made in china)

Can anyone tell me whether its 440C or 420HC and how they can tell? I'm not sure when they downgraded to 420HC

probably not.. 440c is good, better than 420 atleast on paper

well i know its better. But I'm wondering whether or not my knife is indeed 440c. In the winter they started producing theses knives with 420 HC instead of 440c

to be honest i wouöd stay away from both these steels, look around see if you can find better steel for your $ ats-34/154cm atleast

I have no idea as to what steel it is but there ain't nothing wrong with 440C.

Many custom makers use this steel because it is a good durable stain resistant and time proven steel.

I think you will find quite a few people who prefer it over the ATS34/154CM mentioned earlier.

As to your question, the buck forum you mentioned is likely to be your best bet.

Late year Buck switched Chinese Production knives from 440C to 420 HC. I have knives in both, but I would go for one in 440C if given the choice. Both bear the same date stamp. Buck printed the steel type on the package.

The yellow and black box from behind the counter, or the blister pack hanging inthe aisles?

The yellow and black boxes don't say what steel, but the blister packs do.

nothing is hanging in the aisles. The only way to see it is that there is a glass compartment at the checkout counter with pictures of the knives. What's a blister pack?

A blister pack (sometimes called a clamshell pack) is where theknife is completely enclosed in clear plastic with a hole at the top to hang it on the hooks on the shelves of some stores. Wal-Marts normally have the Buck knives behind the counter in the display like yours, but around Christmas they also had them out in the aisles hanging on shelves in blister packs.

Gander Mountain stores also have them in blister packs.

Here is a picture of a Buck 373 in a blister pack.

None of my Buck boxes have the steel on them.

I just bought a buck 110 that was packaged in a clamshell pack. The steel was listed on the back, left-hand side.

You bring a good point to mind though, since Buck is expanding the number of steels they use, it would be nice if all their packaging would give the steel used.
