Hi, new here. Just a quick question about buck pocket knives. I recently bought a buck solo and toothpick from the ebay saller “ecop”. They had these knives for sale with a few different steel types listed, a few dollars more for the better steels, so I bought a solo in 440C and a toothpick in 420HC. Then I read somewhere on the forum that buck stopped making the solo in 440C a long time ago. I emailed the seller to clarify the steel type for both knives, but they have not responded. How can I tell what steel type the knives are when I receive them, or are they definitely not 440C/420HC?

I intend to use the knives for carving hardened epoxy clay, which is probably similar in hardness to a soft wood.

The ad says your Solo was made in China. AFAIK Buck lists two models of the 302 Solitare, both made here in the U.S and both in 420HC.

This years catalog shows the Solo and the toothpick to be imported with blade steel of 420J2.

Sorry, I should have clarified, by Solo I meant the 379 Solo, not the Solitaire.

I think Siejun is returning the knife because the product was intentionally misrepresented and he paid more for the higher grade steel. Then didn't get it. DM

For future reference, if a 300 series has a zero as the second digit, it is USA made. A 7 or 8 as the second digit is Chinese made. BOTH the USA made and China made have the exact same Forever Warranty. Both are a high quality Buck knife. Buck does not put their name on garbage.
