Hello,

I've recently purchased a Buck Fixed Blade Tactical/Survival knife. I'd like to know what the model is and when it was manufactured. I've never seen another one like this before. It has a 5.5 in. square tipped blade, 60% serrated blade, the back side has about 2in. sharpened for brush. There are 4 holes in the tang, two ahead of the handle, 2 in the back of the handle side by side. The handle is black ribbed hardened rubber or plastic. The sheath is plastic and black nylon. The knife "snaps into the sheath" and also has a web band that snaps around the handle.

On the knife, the only markings are Buck USA. The Sheath has BUCK on the snap.. thats it. I cant find another picture of it anywhere on the net.

I'm sure one of the better Buck Collectors knows this knife's history..

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

Sounds like you have the Buck Intrepid. There were two models and two sizes of each model. I think but I'm not sure it's a Kit Carson design. They came out in the late nineties and are now discontinued.

Scott,

Thanks for the info... after using your info it looks like its a Intrepid Chisel point.. not the tanto point. but its definately an Intrepid by the looks of your picture you posted... Were these a good Knife? Does anyone know what steel they are made out of?

Thanks for the quick reply,

Jerry

Jerry, I believe the steel is Buck's standard stainless 420HC. I sold several as a dealer and they are built solid as a rock. Kinda wish I would have hung on to one but I don't care much for the tanto point and have no need for a chisel point knife. All I can say is you can't go wrong with a Buck, any Buck that is. :D

The 187 and 189 were both available in Tanto and Chisel Point. It was originally designed as a Survival/ Dive knife by Kit Carson. They were discontinued from our normal line a few years back. We do make them for Government agencies still. They are very popular among tactical teams as a breaching/ access tool. The 187 TA is also bought by aircrews as a crash/ survival tool.
