I store all my knives not in use in a steel desk. Specifically, the wide center drawer, and the top of the 3 side drawers. It locks (to discourage casual handing), but I can quickly view my accumulation...
I have the drawer bottoms lined with a couple of old cotton pillow cases. Keeps the knives from sliding/scuffing.
A day or two ago, I pulled out a Buck to photograph for a post here...the bottoms of the brass bolsters were quite tarnished...
But the tops were fine...
This was a Buck that I had *not* car waxed...The waxed brass Bucks were OK, as were all the "nickel" bolstered Bucks (and others)...
I'm guessing that the cloth absorbed the moisture from the air and that accelerated the tarnishing...This is my computer room; not really climate controlled, but does have air-con in Summer...
So, now I've lined the drawers with waxed paper over the cloth, to keep the brass off the cloth...and cleaned all the tarnished unwaxed bolsters...
The aluminum and "nickel" bolsters were not affected...perhaps the alloys in them don't tarnish as quickly...but they're all on waxed paper now anyway...
Coincidentally (or not), several PCs in this room have tarnished CPU and/or RAM edge connectors which affected performance...and even booting...removing and cleaning the contact surfaces restored the PCs to 100% operating efficiency...
Same cause, I'm guessing again...moisture on the gold-plated contact surfaces...
Has to be during the Summer months...The rest of the time, the area is dry...
(We have four seasons here...Pre-Winter; Winter; Post-Winter; and the two weeks of Summer)...
...Just an observation...No recommendations needed...
