I just got the BU880 along with a camo 271. As I had not handled the 880, nor seen any images of it in hand, you can imagine my surprise when I opened the box. This puppy is a monster, with a massive 154CM blade and thick Titanium liners. The BU880 came 'shaving sharp', literally. I had missed a spot under my chin during my morning shave, so I used the 880 and dry shaved it clean as a whistle.

Photos alone just don't convey the sheer massiveness of this knife. From the liners, to the blade, to the thick G-10 scales, if the term 'tank' is applied to a knife, this one is near the top of the list.

The Buck/Strider 880-SP is the strongest folder I own and I am very pleased with the purchase. For people with large hands, this knife is Heaven sent.

More than just a pretty face.

Open frame construction.

A nice radius on the tang.

Solid lockup, showing the thick Titanium liners.

Stainless steel pocket clip.

G-10 texture.

Thanks for looking. :)

That is one of my Favs!!!! I would like to find the same knife in a mini but I really like the Big one. Great knife and great photos!!!!

How does this knife compare to an Al Mar SERE 2000? I'm looking for a good wilderness folder and it looks like this might be a good one.

Of course finding one might be a little harder than the SERE. :thumbdn:

Chad

I don't have a SERE to compare it to, Chad, but if you 'Google' Buck Knife 880SP, you should find some prospects.

Thanks, Goose!

Truth be known, it was that very pic that set me on my journey to find an 880. I think that Buck is going to have to start paying you a commission. ;)

Nice knife APF and great pics. I have an 881 and I'd like to pick up an 880 sometime.

Thanks, Messer! I haven't seen you about lately. I was about to send the same search party that I had ready for Goose. ;)

The Buck 880 is modeled after the Strider AR. The AR is even more massive but so is the price!!

More massive than an 880!!
That would be like having a folding cold chisel.

I'm alive and kicking APF. Just have not been able to visit the forum as often as I'd like.

And while I was gone, I see there are custom shop 112's and G10 110's! Wow!

One thing to keep in mind. The AR is essentially flat ground with a distal taper... whereas the 880 is saber ground. They're both formed out of 3/16th stock (on paper at least) so the 880 is actually a bit tougher, as far as the blade goes, at least. it would be cool if one of the guys here has both, if they could take a pic of the tips of the two, next to each other for comparison.

I've had both, still have 2 AR's, and I would love to get another one of the Bucks. As much as I like my AR's, I actually like the overall design of the Buck sp even better! I would want the 2nd generation model like you have A.P.F. as there were some design changes if I remember correctly. I think the lock bar was heat treated, a single washer was used on each side, and the handle was set up for right and/or left pocket carry. I think the ti liners on the Buck are around .100", while both of my AR's are .105" thick, so not much difference there. Both of mine are BOS heat treated, for which I'm glad. You have a very nice example of the 880 there A.P.F., enjoy carrying it!!:thumbup::D

Btw, I always thought if I get another one I would have STR do me a low ride clip for it as the clip placement was not to my liking. Man would I love one set up like that!

Thanks, Cutter. Yup, your description is right on the money and I count myself very fortunate to find one of these beauties. If I find another stash, I'll find some way to get the word out.

I have both the early hollow ground AR (like the 880) and the later flat ground AR. Both in my opinion are beefyer than the 880, which I also have, and the hollow ground AR definitely is. The 880 was modeled after the hollow ground version. I should have made that clarification.
