buck strider 880 problems

I just received my first Buck/Strider 880 spear point in the mail (03-27-2006). I have many Buck Knives and they have never let me down. I have always been able to depend on the quality and craftsmanship that Buck knives bring. However, to my surprise, and for the first time I was disappointed in a Buck knife.

On the blade I noticed grind marks on each side of the blade. At first glance I thought they were scratches, but closer examination showed that they were not. I can feel the indent on the blade where the marks are.

The next problem I identified was the lock up. Where the liner lock meats the blade to lock it open, the two do not fit flush. There is only one side of the liner that is touching the blade. Also the liner goes past center before lock up. The liner is also discolored, like it was improperly heated.

I noticed after open and closing the knife a few times, the ball that holds the knife shut was gone. The ball was there when I first looked at the knife and could feel it when opening for the first couple of times.

I bought this knife to use on duty as a police officer. I need it to with stand a lot of difficult tasks. I was looking for “the knife that wouldn’t’ fail”. In its current state I wouldn’t trust it for light tasks. I believe this one just fell through the cracks of quality control.

This kind of thing can happen with any brand of knife or with any product made. If I were you I would email Joe Houser and tell him your situation. I have had occasion to check with him on a buck knife question and he was very helpful. I'm sure if you contact Buck they will take good care of you and you will be a happy camper. good luck, ahgar

I sent the knife back yesterday. I did want to talk to someone from Buck, but I couldn't find a e-mail address on their web page. I also called them, but was not able to talk to a real person in the customer service departement.

Does anyone know Joe Houser's e-mail?

No the only person I was able to talk to was the operator. They then patched me into the customer service department where I left a message. However, I do work grave yard and have dialed the wrong number from time to time during day walker hours. :)

If I were you I would email Mr Houser that way you have a specific person to deal with and he will take care of you. his email address is
jhouser@buckknives.com
I'm sure he will make sure your problem is taken care of.
btw- get off the nightshift it'll kill you. ahgar

I'm confident you'll have this resolved to your satisfaction, due to Buck's legendary customer service.

My 889 is bullet and bomb proof, and one of my favorite knives. I'm guessing you got a lemon and once you get it replaced you'll be very happy with your 880.

Good luck!

Here is the scoop. I sent my knife on Tuesday and got it back on Saturday. Yes the same week. It only took Buck 3 days to take car of my knife (2 days shipping). Thats what I call service. The knife is now up to speed and is performing like I would expect from a Buck/Strider. After using it for a few days, I could say it is the knife that will not fail (all ready pryed a door open at work with it and not a scratch).

As for Joe, he's there for a reason. I sent him off an e-mail and he replied to me the same day. Then when I got the knife I sent him another e-mail saying how pleased I was. I wouldn't expect a reply from most people, but you geusted it, Joe replied to the second e-mail. I'm very impressed with Joe and Buck. I was so impressed I had to order another Buck/Strider, the 882 with G-10 handles.
