I recently purchased a Buck Strider 880 SP. Made in 2007. the blade is 154CM. Does anyone know if this is the inferior 154CM put out by Crucible?

It is Crucible 154CM, but it is far from inferior. What you are thinking of was the early batches of 154CM that had some impurities. All later 154CM is excellent steel and in the case of the Buck/Strider 880SP, the steel is heat treated by Paul Bos. Definitely nothing to sneeze at.

Not only nothing to sneeze at, my 881sp is one of the best edge holding knives I own. The BOS HT makes a huge difference, or so it seems to me.

What does Paul Bos do that's so magical? You won't be able to tell the difference between his and any other quality heat treat

I think you have it right with the term 'magical', mongomondo. Paul Bos has earned himself a world wide reputation as one of the best heat treating 'wizards' there is. Paul does the HT for many custom knife makers, as well as for Buck. He has fine tuned the process over many years and uses state of the art equipment, all the while developing HT for the newer steels.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that other makers have not developed good heat treatments, rather that a Bos HT is consistently among the best.
