Well, it has finally landed in my sweaty palms. After a chase around the countryside visiting various sorting offices to track it down after the postman failed to find the farm on which I live, (Only 4000 acres with a sign 12' x 8' at the entrance! ), I am now the proud owner of my first Strider collaboration. Some might have been disappointed by the edge on the knife when it arrived, it was barely sharp enough to take the hairs off my forearm, but those same folks would probably not understand the joy I can take from putting a decent edge on a good piece of steel. And what a chunk of a piece of steel it is! This is one seriously sturdy knife. Now that I have an edge on it that shaves closer than a Remington, I cannot see many tasks that I wouldn't be happy tackling with this thing in my hand.
I don't like the sheath that the knife comes in, but I always knew I wouldn't. With it's loose fit (for the sake of being able to sheath the knife either way round I guess) the knife rattles within the kydex liner and the sheath is too fussy for my liking. The small pocket on the front is not large enough to be of much use to me and the QR buckle and strap will only add to the list of things I can get snagged up on. I'll be maing a leather home for the knife very soon.
Now, before I start to play with the thing, the questions.. Do the handle slabs come off easily by removing the torx screws, or are they glued on? I'm interested in perhaps making new slabs from sculpted leather for a more comfortable grip. I know it's not really in keeping with the spirit of a tactical knife, but SWAT Team leader I ain't, and I will be using this knife quite a lot.
Will removing the slabs void any warranty clauses?
What is the purpose of the screw fitting with the rubber grommets in it at the bottom of the sheath? All I can think of is that it fixes the sheath to a military style webbing set or holster rig, perhaps in the handle down position?
