Buck Strider finish

I am seriously considering purchasing a mini Buck Strider. However, I am not a really big fan of bead blasted finishes and would like to possibly have the knife recoated. That being said, my questions are: If I do have the knife refinished, would that void the warranty as whoever did it would most likely have to take the knife apart? Could I send it back to Buck and would they refinish it for me? And lastly, could anyone recommend someplace that refinishes knife blades? I was thinking about either a black coating of some sort or maybe a boron carbide coating, but I am open to suggestions. Thank you for your time and responses in advance.

i heard, bodycote.com.

but they may not do it anymore, cause i think there were some problems in the past about knives. you're really going to have to call them.

As for beadblasting, I'm willing to bet that if you sent the blade back to Buck, they'd refinish it to the blast again.

Coatings suck though, how come you want that?

hate the corrosion/rust prone beadblast. I wish buck made it in satin. you can create your own satin with sandpaper but i prefer a nice even finish from the factory and i prefer not to sand off the logos on it. just look how nice the hard chrome EK cqc7s are.

Midget: I usually carry my knives IWB, and during the warmer months, perspiration and the humidity build up on the knife. I wipe it down and take care of all my knives, I just find that having a coating on the blade of some sort gives me a little more resistance to rust formation.

Nonbox: How do you satin finish a blade with sandpaper? What grit and technique do you use? While I probably wouldn't want to sand off the logo, it really seems to be one helluva knife, and I think I could live with the tradeoff. (Plus, who knows, maybe if I ask nicely, the nice people at buck would put the logo back on :) ?)

Thanks for the input so far.

Makes sense.

I have that same problem with my beadblasted finishes (used to have buck-striders, currently strider SA and ryan model7).

After a hard day of frolicking in the snow (oh, i love MI) there are small spots that develop on the sides.

It used to bug me, but after a while I just stopped caring. Every month or two I take some 800 grit wet-or-dry to it. It only takes a few swipes to take off the rust, then I get lazy and dont maintain it for another month or so.

I think it would take A LOT of sanding to take out the stamped logos.

Coatings look AWFUL after getting bashed up, don't you think?

Midget: I don't mind the look of the knife when the coating gets scratched up. If I do get this mini-strider, I am getting it with the clear cut intent of using it and using it alot, so I'm not too concerned with it staying in "like new condition". I do understand what you are saying, though, I just feel that whatever scratches or marring on the finish are kind of like "badges of honor" for the knife in question. It shows that you use your knife and don't just carry it around for the sake of saying that you carry a knife.
BTW, did you like your Buck Strider? I would appreciate any comments or criticisms about it that you had.
Thanks.

I'd get the mini Strider and not worry about it. Some regular preventative maintenance with FP-10 CLP or Corrosion-X should keep your gear in top shape. Works for me. The bead blast finish actually helps retain the thin film of protectant, keeping the blade from rusting.

I love my Strider Buck SB2 spearpoint. I use mine hard at work, with no worries. Definitely a good buy.

I think my BS's were ok when I had them. They just didn't do it for me, personal preferance. Not into linerlocks, the clip against the rough G10 really did hell on my pants. I really, really wish there was a deeper choil cut into the handle.

Street soldier, you should hold out just a bit on the BS. I saw that Buck came out with revised models recently. I think, smoother scales, clip left/right, dual thumbstuds. I only saw serrated, I dunno about PE's.

street soldier, if you don't care that much about scratches due to normal use then a used buck strider might be a better choice. You can find them on ebay or on the for sale area of this forum. Buying used will save you money.

I hate the part serrated Buck Striders but I prefer the smoother scales. When are the new models coming out?

I have a tanto Buck Strider and I have not taken sand paper to it. If you run a search on this forum, you might find pics that were posted by a guy who sanded away the beadblast.

copy and paste the link into the address bar, add a space at end of url, and pic will show.

If you were to buy one of the Strider/Bucks, you can send it in to me at the Buck factory and I will give the blade a satin finish. The stamp will not be removed, good thing too because we can not re-stamp one of those heat treated blades.
Email me for details on this if you are interested.
Take care,

Joe Houser, Does the offer for a satin finish done at buck only apply to buck striders purchased recently at buck?

I have a new in box buck strider that I would like to have satin finished.

Can you post the address where I can send it to?

You can send it to me at:
Joe Houser
1900 Weld Blvd.
El Cajon, Ca. 92020

Please email me first for additional details.
Take care,

Joe, I sent an email to you and haven't heard back yet. I'm not sure if it got lost in cyberspace, I screwed up the send, or what. Anyway, I am interested in having the knife satin finished. Could you either post or email me as to what I have to do to get this accomplished. Thanks.
