Buck/Strider fixed blade?

It's likely a Buck-Strider 888 Solution.

Did it look like this?
The pic on this site has the earlier 'flat grind' blade:

Higher-volume production blade grind:

Limited batch made with BG42 steel. Another batch made with a flat ground blade. Higher volume 'production' models made with a half-blade, hollow-type grind.

I'm sure there are more folks here who could fill in some of the remaining blanks of info...

Mike

I'm working by memory here, so the details may not be precise, but. from what I can recall, it had a full flat grind. I see the pics of the Solution, but it doesn't ring with my memory of the knife I saw. I could swear it had a round finger choil on the blade, which the Solution does not have.
However, if the Solution is the only Buck/Strider of this style that they produced, then I guess that's what it is.
I'm going to the shop this week-end and will check it out.
What kind of sheath did they come with? I can't find any pics of sheaths.

Check out the sheath in the pic within the second link (fernknives) above. That is what the sheath looked like.

To my knowledge, Buck has never produced any other fixed-bladed knife even remotely similar to the 888 Solution.
That shop may have an earlier 888 Solution that someone has 'pimped' or customized.

Thanks for the help Flash.
I don't think it's pimped, it's just a dusty old knife that's been there a long time, my memory is likely just wrong on the details.
I'll see if they will swing me a deal since it's obviously not moving.
That sheath doesn't work for me, so I'd have to get a custom Kydex made.

The early 888 Solutions had a SpecOps sheath (I think that was the name of the maker/mfr) and were quite well made. Before dumping the sheath, check on the reverse side who made it. In general, the sheathes were actually quite good...

You could offer it for sale instead of trashing it if it's in good shape.

At one time, I owned four (4) of the 888 Solutions. Two were light user knives, one was the standard late production model and the fourth was an earlier 'flat grind' model in mint condition. The only one I have left is the minty earlier 'flat grind' model. Wish I would have kept 'em all.

I've seen pics on another forum where a forumite replaced the standard scales with some ranger green G10 scales. Looks great!

I wouldn't throw away the sheath or anything, it just doesn't suit my purpose, which would be EDC.

The knife actually would be rather good for EDC since it's quite flat.
However, the blade and the handle are both quite wide, so you may want to check it out at the shop first before purchase if you'd only want it for EDC. (Would not be good for concealed carry - IMHO.)

And, if you decide you don't want it, please give me a shout. :)

Mike

Yeah, for $109 I can't really go wrong. From what I can glean from the net they retailed for over $150.
If I get it and it doesn't suit me I'll let you know. If I don't get it, I'll give you the phone number of the shop, I'm sure they'll send it to you, they're in Vermont.

That's correct - they were originally ~$150, so if you can get a nice one for a bit over $100, that's a good deal.
Just keep in mind that the handles do feel a bit like holding a 2x4 when handling the knife. If you're okay with that or want to modify the handles a bit and are okay with the size, then it should suit you fine for EDC.

As a side note, I really wanted to get a Strider EB-LS for a very long time and thought the 888 Solution was definitely a great budget-minded alternative.

Mike
