Buck Strider folder.......880T or 880SP?

hi,

i consider buying a Buck Strider tactical folder, but i can't decide between the tanto (880T) and the spearpoint (880SP). the tanto appeals to me because it seems strong enough to do some serious oil-drum stabbing or door-prying and would be able to handle more abuse than the slighly fragile spearpoint, but on the other hand i'm afraid the tanto-version will lack general utility-skills because of it's flat tanto-blade with no curve for delicate slicing and stuff....

which one would you choose, or do you own already so you can share some experiences with the knife?

by the way, which version is generally considered the most popular and useful?

much obliged in advance for any help,

grtz

I used to have both, but I sold the Tanto. Does that answer your question? ;)

The Spearpoint is much more useful as an EDC knife, and I found my self carrying the spearpoint instead of the tanto every time.

I've got the spearpoint, too. The tip isn't at all fragile. Nothing on that knife is fragile :)

I had the tanto and sold it off. I just ordered a spear point. The tanto tip on the Buck Strider is very stout, so much so that it didn't really have an edge. I can't stress that enough, I mean it was dull. It was designed to puncture things that knives shouldn't have to. So for stabbing it would be fine, but then again so is a screw driver. And I've had screw drives that had a sharper edge. The bottom edge on the other hand was very sharp. The one I had was the limited production model in BG-42 and the bottom edge sharpened up great.

If your looking for something to function as an EDC to open packages, cut rope, or other basic cutting tasks the tanto is not it. I'd go for the spear point. If your looking for a tip that does not have much on and edge but is thick and stout (the strongest I've seen) and all you care about is a bottom edge then the tanto may be for you. I'd try to go to the local knife shop (if possible) and see if they have one or both lying around and then make your decision.

Hope that helps.

I have the tanto. I will never give that knife up. But I want a spear point to use much more. Get the spear. Get an extra one and send it to me please!

IMO the spear tip is just as good as stabbing as the tip grinds are less obtuse than the tanto. I have stabbed some firewood in my back yard and the blade is one stout piece of work. The other downside to the tanto is that the leading edge isn't sharpened like the primary.
