I was talking with a forumite in chat who sung the praises of the tanto B/S frolder, but said if he had to do it over, he'd get the spear point version. Which leads me to this question. For thos eof you who own thes eknvies, why did you get the tanto and/or spear? whould you rather have one or the other? Where do each excel? Thanks everyone.

... if I had it to do over again, I never would have traded it :D

Yeah, I would get the spearpoint one. What the tanto will do for your confidence, the spearpoint will do for the soul. If you want to get a lot of use out of your SB1, that's the way to go. The tanto is left thick on purpose to prevent tip breakage in tactical situations. If you must have a tanto (like I did), you can reprofile the secondary edge so it will actually be an edge.

I ordered, and still have a tanto version. It is a great knife to use and abuse, very strong. If I were to do it again I would probably buy the spear point version. It just seeems to me it would be more useful than the tanto. I have left the point as it was basically, I don't need it to be that sharp, as long as the main portion of the blade is sharp.

I do like the fact the the tanto gives me an extremely strong tip for prying, and as it is kept thick I won't worry about it breaking on me. I think I might buy the SP just to have both. The SP is better for general utility work than the TP, but the tanto would really excel when the going gets real tough.

I have a large tanto version. I've had it for about two months, and I wouldn't change a thing. I usually carry a couple of knives, so if I need a delicate cutting instrument, I'll whip out a Temperance or my ATCF. I like the stout tip, personally. You might be surprised that it is very pointy, despite the thick profile. When I received mine, I was pleased with it's pointiness!!

The spear model is okay, but I have too many spear points on other knives. This tanto is different than other tanto's. It's a keeper.

I originally got the Tanto blade on mine. Reason why? it was the one that came available to me on a trade. If I could do it over again and pick and choose, I'd get the spearpoint. Granted, it's not as convenient if you encounter a tactical situation where you have to stab the Black Knight with your folder, But I've found ALOT more call for a sharp cutting edge at the tip than I've found for a tip that can can be run through an engine block or something. I thought about having the tip of mine reprofiled, but that would have made it a completely different (and very ugly) creature than it was intended to be.

I like the spearpoint.I've only had one tanto(American)and got rid of it,just couldn't get used to having a "corner" on the cutting edge.I have a knife from Kris Cutlery with a Japanese tanto blade and love it.

Thanks for the info.

I'm thinking about changing my EDC stuff. I think a SAK or Stockman with a HARD USE folder will make a more flexible configuration. I can use the SAK for opening the mail and such, and the hard use folder for rough and tough jobs.

It looks like both the spear point and the tanto point are plenty strong at the tip, but I just don't know which would be better to get for myself, if I get either one. Yeah, I know, get both!

I like tantos for utility and such. But the Buck/Strider tanto is quite different from the others out there.

got a buck/strider tanto for x ams and have carried daily since then - since i also carry a MT LCC i use the MT for utility work, and keep the strider reserved for tac use - i like the tanto, wish it was ground diff at the tip so it would sharpen up, but fine for stabbing, etc - now i wanna get a SP lol - my suggestion is to get both, then get ready to make the same decision about the AR/GB striders.......and end up w/both of them too prob lol

I got the tanto in BG-42 in a trade....I love the knife. Mainly the reason I got the tanto was that I don't own any knives with that style of blade. The tanto is very thick....If I had it to do over again I'd still get the tanto..but if I was looking for a good all around utility blade go with the spear point.

If you can find one in BG-42 regardless of blade style get it.:D
