Last week while scouring the internet for more knives I ran across an auction for a Buck/Strider folder. I bid and ended up winning the knife and it arrived today. Well over the weekend I went back to read the auction and did something that’s getting to be a weekly occurrence. I misread or didn't pay attention to specs. It turned out it was a Mini. I can't tell you the number of times I have bought a knife online and it ended up being smaller than I thought. The Cuda Maxx being the only knife to be the opposite. Well when I opened the box today I was very pleasantly surprised. Even the mini is a good sized EDC. I am very happy with the purchase and now looking to add the full sized version to my collection. Anyone else have one?? What do you guys think about them?? Thanks

TheBadGuy,

I just received a full sized tanto the other day. Look for a review (first part of one) hopefully later today!

I can understand why the mini would be a good size for many. It really isn't mini. Then again, I didn't find the Buck/Strider to be HUGE either. I have an AFCK, and the AFCK has a blade that is a smidgen longer, and the handle is longer too! The SB-1 is wider and thicker though.

The only things that I would like different about the folder can be found on the custom version, so I am more than satisfied! The folder is a real deal production hard use tool.

More on that later though! Enjoy your knife!

I got a full-size spearpoint. The design reminds me of a scaled-up Sebenza, especially the blade profile, and the simple handle slabs.

It replaced my Vaquero Grande as regular carry in the woods, and I show it no mercy at all. I haven't been able to damage the ATS-34 edge but the metal is stained and I routinely have to pry leaves and bark out of the liner. The liner lock is insanely robust.

I just got a MOD CQD and found it to be similar in blade shape and size. The CQD handle is more ergonomic-looking but the Buck/Strider is easily as comfortable and warmer in cold weather. The weights are about the same 7 oz. So for a big folder, the Buck/Strider is pretty easy to carry.

One thing surprised me: the handle slabs are absolutely symmetrical, including the cut-out for the thumbstud. But they didn't put in a dual thumbstud, which the design would support really nicely.

I used to own a Buck Strider, the tanto version. I liked it very much but only fondled it while I was waiting for the full-size brother, a GB. When I received my GB and had it for a while I noticed that I never would carry the Buck version. So I traded it.

As mentioned it probably has one of the strongest linerlocks I´ve seen.

Robust knife indeed.

I just got a 1st production run BG-42 large spearpoint. Oh man is this thing big and beefy! But my liners aren't parallel with eachother, which is having an adverse effect on smoothness, so it'll have to go back to Buck for some attention.

After having picked up a couple that had questionable qc, I finally got hold of one that was perfect out of the box.......then I gave it up. Got to missing it though so I picked up another one and again struck gold as it is also perfect out of the box. These are great knives and as everyone has said they are built for the long haul. These knives are also begging for a little modification also:D ;) and it is fun to modify! I took mine completely apart and attacked it with my Dremel. I have mirror polished the huge blade pivot along with the three standoffs and their associated screws. I also polished the clip but left the screws there in the black for the contrast. I polished the blade tang where the knife actually rotates around the pivot, and then I mirrored the thumbstud and the screw that holds it on. The liners were sanded down to 400 grit wet/dry paper to a brushed satin finish but polished with the dremel in the pivot area. The handles were also rounded on the sharp edges to give a more comfortable fit while I also hit the checkered flats with some 400 grit paper to ease them down a bit. The sanding resulted in a much more comfortable knife to hold while the other just made it a bit more pleasing to the eye along with a slicker opening process for the polishing I did around the pivot area.

Again these are great knives in full size or in mini version!

I didn't care much for the mini I got. It is too small. Just a couple openings and closings and it went back into the box.

Did you get a mini spearpoint? If so, do you want a tanto too? Email me!
