Buck Strider Lock Problem

Hi!

I got a Buck Strider Tarani with the ATS34 blade and rivets some months ago. I've been very happy with it, It's strong and the tip is bombproof but there is an issue with the lock I recenlty found out that have made stop trusting it.

When open, the liner goes 3/4 over the tang, and just tried a very light spine whack test and it will disengage the lock every time I try.

Have you experienced the same problem? Will Buck fix it I send it to the warranty department?

I love the knife but I won't use a knife I can't trust because of the lock...

Thanks!

send it in to them and they will fix it , i have never had a warranty issue with buck but everything i have read here suggests they are top notch

I have never had a problem with a Buck liner lock knife,
But I dont spine whack it and I dont cut with the back side of the blade?
I cant forsee any problems??? Do you spine whack a slip joint?
This test of a knives lock really confuses me...

Obviously I don't spine whack a Slipjoint, but when I buy a knife with a lock I do its to be sure It won't close on my hand when I'm using it. I don't use a knife with a lock the same as a knife without one.

No, I don't use the back of the blade to cut but there are situations in real use, like cutting branches for example, when you can accidentaly hit a branch with the spine of the blade exactly as a spine whack and get the knife closed with you fingers in between.

I don't abuse my knives and I don't try the locks with a heavy spine whack but I think it's not normal for a knife with a lock (any kind of lock) to close with a light spine whack, at least, I don't have any other liner lock knife that fails the same test and that's why I think it's not normal.

I hope you don't get one closed on you, I try to make sure I don't have one closed on me.

Even though I'm not a big believer of the spine wack test I don't feel a light tap should be enough to defeat the lock. I wish I had some better advice than "send it in", but I agree that's the best idea. I have no doubt Buck will take care of it for you.

Just out of curiousity is this a standard test? What qualifies as a light whack?
what do you whack it on? Do knife companies actually use this? I still dont understand the point of it? If I am cutting with a knife all of the pressure (especially on the strider Buck) should be on the blade stop pin.
If there is no actual test used by Buck to check their liner lock strength,
would this knife be considered defective? Is something like this warranteed?
When I was at the blade show this past summer there was a company there hanging weights off the back of their knife blade. I dont know why it would matter if you can hang 100 pounds on the back of the blade. When I cut with it I should be pushing the other way??????
Otherwise email Buck and see what they say I guess:confused:
I could post a pic of a Buck Knives pruning shears I use to cut branches :D:thumbup:

Hi SanShou,
Just send your knife into the warranty department - it'll be fixed or replaced no problem. Here's the address: 660 S. Lochsa Street, Post Falls, ID 83854. I don't know why it failed, but all our knives are covered by a lifetime warranty.

if it makes you feel any better my 889 does the same thing, I don't really see how it does it but it does, contacted mr houser on the forum and he was very helpful and said if i sent it in they would take care of it. really good service, i haven't bothered to send it in yet an probably won't but buck didn't hesitate to offer repair. later, ahgar

I have the same problem on my 889 (been "repaired" once by Buck, but problem still there!), but it costs so much to ship to USA I can't be bothered.

Nice knife otherwise, does flex a lot tho.

Hi Guys
On the spine whack topic, in my video of the Spyderco factory there is a shot of the assembly people giving each knife a light tap on the back of the blade before packing. They appear to all use a similar amount of force, although it is hard to tell exactly how much. Looks more like a downward flick of the wrist than a heavy smack. Anyway that is one company that do it.

I don't think there is an "standard test". I just tap the knife spine and it closes when no other of my liner locks knives performs the same.

what do you whack it on?

I do it on a rubbered armchair, hard but not a hard surface.

Do knife companies actually use this?

I'm afraid I don't know how knife companys test their locks :S

I know some people won't think of this as a problem but I've reading more some comments about people with knives closing on thier fingers and I'd like to avoid that. Of course if you cut you do it using the edge and the stop pin will get the pressure, but imagine for example slicing thick cardboard, when you draw the knife back it will contact the card board with the spine. Same cutting branches, the cutting motion can make yor spine hit branches.

Ok, I know it's not something that will happens often, but I like to be sure it won't happens to me and the spine whack test will test the lock.

About if it's covered by the warranty, That's what I wanted to know and I'm very impressed with Buck customer service. I don't know if its defective or If they will fix it just because I'll be happier with a liner that won't fail the test, either way, I'll send it :)
