I posted this question in the general "blade discussion" forum, but someone suggested that I might receive a response from Buck if I submit it here.

----

I recently purchased a Buck Strider mini spear point 881, and for the most part I am thrilled with this knife. However, after examining it closely I noticed the top of the ATS-34 blade (treated by Paul Bos) is covered in small wrinkles. At first I thought they were cracks, but now I don’t think they’re cracks. It might just be poorly machined? I’m really not sure. Can anyone offer any information regarding this finish -- is this normal? See the picture below.

Again, other than this, I couldn’t be happier with this knife. And who knows, maybe this is the way it's supposed to be.

Thanks,

I can't really tell from the picture, but it looks like you are refferring to the grind lines on the spine of the blade. They are normally there, but they are usually less noticeable. If you would like to send your knife in, we can smooth them out for you.

See online_much, I knew someone from the factory would address yor issues here. Josh doesn't mention it in his post or his signature, so let me tell you he is from Buck's Tactical Knife Division. If he says they can smooth them out, trust him! :D

Thanks Josh for not making a liar out of me.... ;)

I would guess that would be cut lines from Lasering the blank. It should be sanded off before assembly.
Send it in if you want, and we will rework it for you.

I will check stock of blades and make sure we have that under control :)

J Hubbard,

Is this something that is going to compromise the blade? Is it brittle or will it wear quicker if I don't have you rework it?

Is this something I could do myself, or would that void the warranty?

If I was to send it in, how long does Buck normally take to return the knife?

Thanks for your help!

i got my buck back in about 3 weeks when i sent it to them and that was over the holidays. and as for the warranty THAY ARE THE BEST!!!! check this thredd out

by the way i seem to have the same "small wrinkles" on my blade if you look its on most of the flat out line cuts on the knife.look at the liners its there in the pic. but since the liners are thinner on them it just looks like a ruffed finnish. i think Jeff is corect these areas are cuts that would be made by a laser cutter as the areas that are ground do not have this "small wrinkles " effect. after saying all that i never realy noticed it befor becaus it just looks right on this type of knife it makes it look idustrial and tuff. now that i think about it i like it!
