Buck/Strider ML/FB 420HC?

I am a big fan of the Buck/Strider colaberations, but why would they use 420HC on their ML/FB models and not ATS-34 like the other models?

The basics to why we chose 420HC are

1. Affordability to junior enlisted personnel- these knives were designed by Strider primarily for military applications.

2. The blade geometry works well with 420HC in all matter of tasks, in this knife the benefits of a higher end steel would be almost un noticeable by a user in the field.

3. With Paul Bos's Heat Treat our 420HC comes out as good if not better than our competitors ATS-34 and 154CM.

Black Oxide,

Best coating there is for a field knife, it wears off eventually, but works good to reduce reflection and corrosion.

Blasted Finish, and plain edge

Coming Soon!

Hmmm, I don't suppose they're going to make this style of knife (same handle say and 420HC steel) except with a bowie type blade? I was (am? lol) going to get the plain edge spearpoint but bowies are my thing, I guess..
Oh, I'm sure the steel and coating will be fine. Cliff Stamp, J Rummerfield (there's another thread on just this subject somewhere) and Strider all seem to think so. I believe I read somewhere they had been extensively field tested etc., etc.
Thanks, Rod.

Hi everybody, I don't suppose there's any word on when the plain edge versions of these are coming out? thanks, Rod.

I read the same thing as roderic41. Striders test showed only a minimal difference in performance versus the other steels they tested and a significantly lower cost. I'm just suprised that the Nighthawk isnt more popular than it is.

Sorry for the delay in response guys, been on the road.

The plain edge versions will be available shortly, but probably not before the holidays.

FYI
The Nighthawk is a huge seller for us. I personally love the knife, the first I carried when I joined the Corps in 94.

For me that's exactly the point. I know that everyone would like to have a top piece of equipment, just not everyone can afford high-end knife. That applies to big group of military personel & LEO's... especially in Poland. And if someone can affod, he/she simply buys S30V Strider MT, that's it. So I believe that 420HC has been a good choice for this knife.

Josh, I'm glad to here that about the NIghthawk! I've got the short walmart version and love it.

I got mine around 94 or 95 from a girlfriend, lent it to Range buddy of mine and he returned it with the sharpest edge I have ever had on a knife. He stropped it with a belt whenever he was waiting around. The thing is scary sharp, cuts through anything like butter. I carried it an Eagle sheath I picked up for $20.

The short one is cool too. I like the serrations, very aggressive.
