does any one have any experience with this knife? I am looking to get one,

I have a bunch of knives, but mostly Benchmade and Spyderco, and Benchmade has been my quality standard.

I am a volunteer fireman, and will use it to cut seat belts, and light cutting in daily use, but who knows.

also I see a nylon edition, is the quality that much lower? I am also poor haha, and I am considering both models,,,

any help is appreciated

Would you be better off with one of Spyderco's rescue knives? They are designed to cut seat belts without cutting the person you are trying to rescue. The one model also has carbide tips that can be used to break open car windows in a safe manner.

Spyderco Assist can be seen here:

I recently got one of the G-10 versions. If I were going to get one of these I would skip the FRN handled version. The G-10 version is all screw constructed and the liners are thicker than the FRN or TACCOM version.

I am very satisfied with mine so far.

Do a search for 882 or Tarani or SBT or SBTG and you will get lots of info.

I was talking to a Policeman last weekend at the Janesville, WI knife show. He carries one of these folders and loves it.

The Assist is specifically made for rescue work. The SBT is a tactical knife that will work for rescue work. In my volunteer days we all had pocket knives.110's, Old Timers were the most used then. We never cut anybody. The kids on our local dept dont carry anything fancy either. Alot of one handers and some cheap stuff Us knifeknutts wouldnt own. I gave my neighbor an Assist I for Xmas and everyone liked it but it was out of their price range. Even at 50 online.

Would your fire house issue any knives? What type of quality are they if they do? I like my Buck Strider police folder, but I don't know if it would be good for getting in close to someone who is probably stuck, and maybe a little excited. I would want something without a sharp point on it.

Danbo,
That was me you were talking to, and as i told you the lock up on that knife is still tight and i have cut, proded and probed all kinds of material and garbage with it. It also does a great job in the yard. but mainly i use it for my duty knife.

thanks for the input...

my dept gives us diddly,

and everyone used to carry crud, but I set them straight and shamed them into Benchmades and Spydercos and the such,

i have a rescue hook on my gear for seat belts,,,so I am sure I wil use that most of the time,
i always have a folder of some sort on me, and I was looking for the excuse to get myself one..

i like hearing about peoples experiences...

thanks

Can't help you with that knife, but if you like it get it.I've got 15 years on as a FF for a 525 man dept. Right now I'm a LT. who "floats" all over the city including companies that carry the "tool".aka jaws of life.

Half the guys don't carry any knife the ones who do are mostly junk or walmart stuff with maybe 10 percent a Spyderco,BM grade knife.

I have never nor do I know anyone who had to cut a seatbelt to "free" anyone. I guess it happens. The only time I cut them was to package/remove the PT and the shoulder belt was attached to the door frame. I have used a SAK to cut belts for this and it worked fine.Makes for poor magizine articles though.....

That said I carry mostly a BM 710 combo edge in my pocket and a CRKT M16 in my bunker pants. Personally I carry mostly for SD (my city had a murder rate in 2,003 of FOUR times that of NYC) and self rescue in entanglements.Which is why I also carry wire cutters and ems shears.

again, appreciate the responses, I am going to try one,,,

and I agree about the seatbelts, I am not holding my breath!

Webster! I went to college in Brockport, have been to Webster a bunch of times, and have a friend from there..

very cool...are you a fireman in webster? rochester?

again, appreciate it!

Tim

It is a superb duty knife. I rate it right up there with a Spyderco ATR for uniform work.

If you had the bucks, a Strider SnG works really great also.

And no doubt, there is a boatload of knives out there that as well also. Finding the right is great fun...
