Can anyone here give me a review of the 888 Buck/strider solution?
I am talking about the model made with ATS34.
How does the knife compare to a real strider?
And is the sheath from SOE or is it produced some other place? IF the sheaths are produced by another manufacturer how does it then compare to the ones from SOE?
Finally I would like to know if a leatherman wave-tool will fit in the pouch?
Also Is it true that the heat-treat are done by strider?

Any info is very appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

NB. I did do a search on the forums but only found some info on the folders.

I just know received three of the BG42 models (engraved with the applicable number of 500). The knives have the BOS mark so there is your answer to heat treatment. From what I remember the sheaths are by SOE, since I don't have another to compare I can't verify it, there is an american flag tag that indicated the sheaths are made in the U.S.
I just received them, I haven't even cut paper with them, but they sure look and feel good.
I had originally bought two of them for gifts, my friends may be getting something else.................

I don't have a Wave so I cannot tell if it will fit.

Just got my BG-42 today and I too like the blade. The sheath, however, needs work. The blade flops around too much in it. I planned on modifying it to suit, then thought, since it's numbered, just leave it be and get an ATS-34 model to modify.

Besides, the blade sits too high up. The center of gravity on the knife in the sheath is too high, meaning that you HAVE to keep the strap done up or it might just fall out. Nice blade, just the sheath needs work. Good thing that there's a retaining screw that you can remove so that you can take out the kydex liner and make corrections.

As far as the heat treat, as stated above, Paul Bos does it. According to the Buck rep at the Blade Show, Paul does the heat treat for all the Buck blades (Striders for sure), just as Paul does the treat for Striders. Cryogenically treating the blades seems to make 'em work better.

Hopes this helps a little,
ED

I handled on at the Blade Show and plan on buying one in the future. They are treated by Bos and seems like a great knife, especially at the price. I saw the sheath but didn't pick it up. It looked like and SOE sheath, but I can't say for sure.

I think they are well worth the money. I have one that is the bg 42 pre-production. I have put a Leatherman pulse in with no problems. Chris

Thanks for the good info:D.
I have one more question (a stupid one:rolleyes: ): What kind of box is the knife delivered in?

As a collector I try to keep all of my original knife-boxes. Even the knives I use have their original box.

Thanks for all the replies.

NB. I would also like some comments on my conclusion: I have so far learned that the Buck/strider folders cant compare to the real striders. But the fixedblade has nearly all the virtues of a real Strider.
