This knife has recently caught my eye. I would perform a search, but it appears that I don't have permission. Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about this knife, and what is the actual blade length? I have found different measurements on different sites.

Blade length on my Buck/Strider drop point is a hair under 3.5" long. This is a big, heavy, rugged liner lock. The blade has enough heft to swing out and lock with a wrist flip, but it opens so easy with the thumb stud that I rarely bother. Besides, the liner lock tends to jam a bit when you wrist flick it. The liner is very precisely fitted and stops right in the middle; I haven't seen any signs of wear so far. The edges of the G-10 handle slabs are a bit sharp; I smoothed mine slightly with a piece of fine sandpaper, which took all of about 30 seconds. The clip is strong; it won't slip out of your pocket, but the checkered handles might wear through your jeans first. I carry mine in an Uncle Mike's Sidekick 9 mm. magazine pouch, which fits it very well. The blade is about 3/16" thick with a subtle hollow grind. It cuts very well despite its beefy proportions and is relatively easy to sharpen (easier than VG-10). Some guy name Bos had something to do with the heat treat:D -- his mark is on the blade. A great tool for tough jobs.

Sorry Al, but he is asking about the Solution( the fixed blade).

MW:

If I remember tomorrow, I'll measure the blade length (knife is stored at work) and post it. The knife is built like a tank (doubt it would have the Strider anywhere on it if it wasn't). My version is the ATS-34 (BG42 can still be had, also) and I have absolutely no complaints. For such a "wide/hefty" knife, I had no problems putting a shaving edge on it...much easier than alot of my folders--attribute to the BOS heat treat?

My intended use for this knife is survival--attached to one of the front pouches on my issue aviation life support (ALSE) vest. I think that if I'm ever in such a situation, the knife is a good choice--won't do everything, but will be able to do alot and I'll have one hell of a time destroying it (ie. I can depend on it). As stated in the link that mschwoeb provided, might not be the end all "camp" knife, as least as far as chopping (get a hogleg like the Battle Mistress if that is your thing) or cutting (ginsu?) :D

In the linked discussion, I can answer the question on saltwater immersion...BAD idea for the gent that mentioned it. Despite monthly swipes (yeah, maybe I should do more, but it is a user) with Marine Tuf-Cloth, the tang between the handle has speckles of rust. Only there, though--no, I don't know why only there. Knife hasn't been submerged in the ocean, but (guessing) salt spray from low overwater hover work has come through my copter's vent blowers and dusted the exposed (not inside sheath) portion with salt spray? Guess I just answered my own question above.

Okay, way too long of an answer, so, "yes, good knife; would purchase again".

The functional edge measures just a hair over four inches.

Its a great knife! Probably my favorite fixed blade right now. My only grip is the kydex insert in the sheath scuffs up the blade. Good knife, bad sheath...

Plus, if you look around, you can pick one up for a steal!

im2smrt4u is right, these knives are 90%+ of a real strider at less than half its price. I have the ATS-34 version as a user and the BG-42 is still NIB. I am not aware of any similar-sized BG-42 fixed blade at the pricepoint of the Solution.

The sheath is terrific; on mine the blade does not clatter inside the kydex. The insert is removable, too so you can use a heat gun and form-fit the kydex to the blade if you like. I especially like the pouch on the front and the velcro "hooks" patch in the belt loop. The SOE Rigger's belt I have has the matching "fuzzy" patch on the inside, mating perfectly with the sheath and locking it in place. My only complaint is that the sheath is not drop-style, but rides high on the waist. The knife is just large enough to get in the way sometimes.

The blade from tip to scales is 4.75", but with the large finger choil the cutting length is less. I can measure out any other dimensions if you're interested.

Thank you for all of the info gentlemen. I will be adding one of these knives to my collection asap. Does anyone know where I would be able purchase a kydex or concealex sheath for the Solution. I would like to avoid sending the knife to anyone if it is at all possible.

I think that SOG's X-42 Recondo Field Knife should be around that price. Of course, it's not a Strider collaboration. :)

Could someone compare the lengths and in-sheath bulkiness of this knife and Strider EB-LS, EB-S and SA/DB? I'm thinking about getting one of them (= all of them... eventually. :))

Ah, scratch that. I've found the data I need at this page on BladeArt.com.

I'll have to try that...the kydex insert is taking the finish of the knife! :barf:
