My youngest son asked me to clean up his 889 this morning. After 10 mos. in Iraq it was about as grungy and full of crud as I've seen. Hard to open and full of "moon dust". He was able to keep if fairly sharp with a DMT Diafold but it took me awhile to get the bevels back to something that resemble the originals.

A little brakeclean, a soft SS brush, some q-tips, elbow grease and it's ready for action. Oh yeah, he painted the scales some awful looking Sand, OD, camo color... I left that intact.. ..Excuse the pictures, the lighting on the workbench isn't too good. Mike

Please welcome home your son and also thank him for his valued Service.

I sent a Buck Strider with a friend to Afganistan. He is retired but as a SPEC Op warrior you are really never retired and was back there before the media ever stated anything. On his way back his BUCK Strider was confiscated by SAS guys at the airport returning home. Well long story short I had CJ sign another one that I had and mailed it to him. He now carries it every day again. Great knife. Maybe you can send your son's knife to BUCK and get it signed and personalized.

Mike, the pics are fine... Nice job on cleaning that 889 Strider... Thank your son for me for his service in Iraq... Armand

Rich and Armand, Thanks for your comments, I'll be sure to pass them on to our son.

He and I have come up with a plan. I have two more of these Buck/Striders. He'll take two with him on his next deployment. When one gets grundged up he's going to contact me, I'll ship him one and when he gets it he'll ship me one back for tune-up.

Rich, I like the idea of having his signed. The one I've been carrying for the last year or so was signed by Chuck at the Oregon Knife Collectors show last April. I'm going again this year, if Chucks there I'll have the knife with me for him to sign. Mike

God bless and thank him for serving! I have an 882 and I really like it even with 420HC, it is a good sturdy folder! I'm glad to see that higher version served him well!

Peter, Honored to pass on your gratitude. I'm not a steel expert, but find it much easier to put an edge on the 420HC than the ATS34. The ATS34 does hold the edge longer. I guess it's a trade off, ease of sharpening vs. edge retention. Regardless of the steel its a well designed, functional knife.

Kind Regards, Mike
