I am going to buy another knife for EDC as LEO. I have it narrowed down to buck strider 880 or the MT socom or socom elite. what are you ideas about the two?

thanks

Both are nice knives. MTs are about the best quality you'll find in a factory knife, at least IMHO.

the MT's will have better ergonomics that the Buck, but I'm not sure how easy they are to find anymore? At least in manual. I had an auto SOCCOM Elite but would have preferred a manual.

the socoms a thinner knife, the bs is a thick hitter

for warranty mt will be slow and bitchy, buck will be fast and understanding

I think the spear point Buck Strider is a pretty good cutter and could pound the Microtech apart in a tool on tool battle for supremacy.

The question is do you need that tough for the penalty of increased weight and bulk.

If I was a LEO I might pick the Microtech for smaller size and less weight. Unless you are the type of officer who might expect to open doors with a knife. In which case the difference in weight becomes a good trade off for the added toughness.

I've heard less good things about Microtech now than in the old days.
Think Id go for the Buck.....how about a Buck Mayo?

I'd go with the MT. Unless you have the need for a very stout over built folder. Also, I guess I'd have to ask what the uniform is like? I have a Buck Strider that I never carry in my wool uniform pants its too wide for the front and rear pockets, and you can't sit in the car with it in the sap pocket.

I have carried it when I wear BDU pants in the lower pockets and that seems to work. So if your department allows BDU uniforms for patrol or if your in a special assignment with that unifrom I'd say Buck Strider all the way.

For work I usually carry either a Benchmade AFCK or and Ares.

Stay safe

I would have chosen MT a few years ago for the better slicer. The B/S is a tank of a knife, but the low sabre hollow grind makes for a knife that hangs and binds on dense material.

Recent MT Q/C and C/S have been verrrrry lacking though so if you buy new or if you rely on a mfg's C/S, then.... I'd have to advise Buck, whose CS has been utterly brilliant.

I have both. It's easier to edc a MT. The BS is a must have for the collection. I would buy the MT because Microtech will make a run of a certain knife then they will discontinue it. The BS will be produced for a longer time. I'd buy the MT now and get the BS later.

I think that you should write down what you want the knife to do, and go from there. The Microtech qill probably be a finer cutter, but I bet the BS will take way more abuse and can be used for "non-knife" chores better than the Microtech. I've read of stories online of LOEs using BS knives to pry windows a bit, jam them in doors as a doorstop, etc. A Microtech will be lighter (amazing how much gear a LEO has to carry on a belt; If I were running things it woudl be tac vests for all!)

Personally I'd choose the BS, though I'm not a LEO. I do have the tanto version of the BS, and it, so far, is the sturdiest folder I've owned. Lock-up is rock solid, the knife is used to hack, scrape, chop, hammer with, etc. I'd prefer the spear over the tanto, though I do enjoy the tanto.

Best of luck on your decision!
