I think the top one is 420HC, but I know nothing about knife steel so i dose not meen any thing to me:confused: . which is better?

I believe the ATS 34 would be the better steel. I believe it will be harder to sharpen but hold an edge longer. I have many knives in ATS 34 and they are all great blades.

A word of caution though, I believe I read the Buck versions are prone to closing under pressure. That may be just an isolated incident but it would concern me.

Good luck

You may be sure - it will have best HT (heat treatment) for choosen steel (and best performance). And ATS-34 or CM154 or CPM S30V heat treated by Bos with his logo on it - best you can find at least for productional folders. I read that like 70% of custom maker send their blades to Bos for HT (I don't remember exact number but more thenhalf for sure).

So if you chose 420 it will be good, if you choose something with top steel with Bos logo - it will be the best.

The problem is that for Tarany they do not make top steel blades without serration - I bet it is too hard too compete for Strider with this "cheap" versions, so only 420 has plane edge.

Thanks, Vassili.

My favorite Buck Strider is the Mini 881. I've owned them all at one time or another and it fits my needs better than the others offered but the Tarani in G10 is a fine knife with a nice tip heavy blade that is quite capable. I'd get it over the FRN or whatever Buck calls that hard plastic. The Bos heat treated ATS34 is second to none. Its a fine steel to begin with but with Paul doing the HT it is on the top rung of the ladder.

Do like I do: Buck Mayo TNT, only way to be sure.

Merriam Websters:
Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less
Pronunciation: "ir-i-'gärd-l&s
Function: adverb
Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless
nonstandard : REGARDLESS
usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that "there is no such word." There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

Buc calls THEIR plastic Taccom. I'd get a 172 as well. Its a very nice knife in a VERY light package. If you really want to get a Buck/Strider, the better quality ones in my opinion are the 880 and 881 series. The 889 is not bad, but isn't exceptional either. The 172 is superb.

I carry the 889 as a edc now it has become my perfect knife for work or play. As for the lock up do not worry about it. It was a earlier problem and they fixed it. As for the 400 series steel in it Dont worry, yes you will be sharpening it more often but it does hold an edge. I have reprofiled mine a little with the DMT aligner kit and it is now a terrific slicer.

Negatives on it it is not a stabber, However I really have not needed to stab anything other than a calcium bag at work so it is something that I really dont miss. The handle has been put as a negative, but I have not had any sore spots after heavy cutting and it is fine for me.

The 889 (is it called the SMBF?) is now pretty much my EDC. Im very impressed with it & have since "modded" it by cutting a small channel in the grip, just below & parallel with the "Buck" legend, to hold a green glowring vial.
I didnt know Buck & Strider had done any other versions, I'll have a look. Cheers for the info.
