Buck strider

I had one. I liked it.it carried comfortably and was a solid cutter. I got rid of it when I got Striders.

I don't have any experience with the 889 but I owned an 882 Tarani for a short time. I fell in love with the design and it eventually led me to getting a Strider SnG, so you have been warned....lol. I would recommend the 882, with upgraded G10 scales and ATS34 blade steel, primarily because I don't care for plastic handles, and prefer my knives to be screw constructed to ease cleaning. My only dislike was that the liner was a little thin, but the rest of the knife was so overbuilt it didn't seem to be an issue. The 882 I had was rock solid, with zero blade play and the liner locked up perfectly. I thought it was a great value and while a little more expensive than an 889, they do show up used for around 75-85 bucks. Good luck with whatever you decide.

A nice intro into Strider style knives they are. I've had my share of the different variations, 889, 880, 881, etc. Though they accomplished their intended missions, they aren't anything like the real thing. If you can, save up for a non-collaboration Strider, it would be the way to go. But if I were to go back to Buck Strider, I'd go with the Tarani version with the ATS-34 blade steel and G-10. The 889 seem to be a bit spotty with solid lock up, at least the few that came through my hands. They do carry similar to my SnG and cutting performance is adequate, and edge holding on the 420 is decent as well. Good luck and have fun with your new knife!

If the knife in the link is the knife you want, make sure you check into it a bit. The pocket clip does not seem to be the correct clip. I read that the knife is pre owned but not used, so how did it loose it's clip? The knives are good knives for the most part. I have had several of the Buck Striders and liked them all. If you decide to get that particular knife I have an extra original pocket clip. Contact me here and I will send it to you.

Thanks for the clip offer babakanoosh45. I think i am going to look into the 882 tarani i didn't realize that the 889 had a plastic handle. I think i would rather have the tarani with the g-10 handle.

There's a G10 version on Ebay that I've been eyeballing for the last few days..... I think it ends tonight. You'll have to search for it , I don't want to break any forum rules by linking to it.

Good Luck

I saw the same one but, you go get it.I am not ready to buy just yet.

I had the Tarani plastic handle none screw version ,it was a nice knife comfortable and seemed to be tough but I didn`t trust the liner lock I really don`t think it was thick enough I got rid of it because every other part was built like a tank except the lock and I thought I would forget the lock was not as beefy as the rest of the knife and get myself hurt. Imho I would handle one first you may love how it feels (I did) or you may think "what the hell is this" (My buddy`s words) as others have said get a real strider if you want a tank then you don`t have to worry about breaking it and getting hurt (if you can bring yourself to use a knife that expensive).

I have the 882 Tarani version with ATS-34 and G10. The ebay price on the one you linked doesn't seem great for used to me. It might be discontinued, though. I couldn't find one for sale with a quick search.

The 882 is a solid knife. Clunkier than I'm used to, but has a charm all its own.

The 889's OK, but if you can find an 882, especially the G-10 version, they're a good value. I believe both 882s have ATS-34 steel.

I have been wanting a strider style knife. I do not own any Buck knives, but i really like the look of this knife. What are you guys thoughts on this knife. It looks like a solid knife. You guys reviews will really help. Thanks.

I have a Buck Strider 882 with G10 and ATS-34 and it's one of my least favorite folders. The liner lock is too thin for the bulky blade and the lockup, althought tight, has always made me nervous. The blade isn't centered and has washers of a different thickness on each side. The blade wobbles considerably during opening but becomes rigid as soon as the lock snaps into place.
The texturing on the G-10 is agressive, to say the least. It's like hauling a cheese grater out of your pocket and will shred a pair of jeans much faster than a waved Emerson. I de-clipped it and carry it in a TAD belt pouch when I carry it at all--the overall ergs of this knive made me decide not to persue Strider knives.

I've owned about all of them at some point, the 880 hands down is the best in ats34 and even better in BG42. The 882's I have had all fail the liner lock test and the 889 I still own passes with flying colors. keepem

I carried a Buck Tarani for a while before investing in a Strider SnG. Great knife - if you can find one. I was fortunate - a local knife shop still had one.

Liner lock thickness does not instill confidence, but I never had any problem with it.

As others have warned - it will push you towards a Strider.

Thanks for your thoughts guys.I will take them all into considerations.I am trying to decide between the buck strider or the zt 0500 mudd. The price between the two is not that big.
