are these things worth a damn? considering buying the one with the ats-34 steel and the bos treatment.

I'm not a strider fan. However, I think they are a great knife for the money. If you can buy it right and like it do it.

You talking about the Tarani? Link. I have one thats a safe queen. Going only by fit, finish, feel and so forth, its seems like a pretty well made piece of knife. Worth the price of admission in my opinion. Mine does not get carried and used only because I have so many other dang knives.

I have several of the Buck-Strider 889s (FRN hanhdle with 420 blade) and one of the 887 (FRN handle and the ATS-34 blade). I used to have one of the 882s, but sold that one a while back before I really got 'into' the Buck-Strider folders.
There's one guy who always posts about how the liner locks on these folders are terrible and fail. That's one data point and based on one knife.
I currently have five (5) and with the 882 I previously sold, that makes six (6) and they all lock up well and solid.

If you can get one for a reasonable price (and a price that is acceptable to you), then I would recommend you get one.
I've found that the 889s with the 420 blade do take and hold a decent edge. Plus, I like that plain-edged blade. The 887 with the ATS-34 blade does hold an edge longer, but it has the partial serrations. I've actually found that the 420 blade seems to have more 'bite' to it, too, on its plain-edge. Really grabs and cuts what I want.

I've mostly used the 889s and 887s for garage, home, and garden chores. Had one of the 889s buried in mud while using it (dug out some small roots in wet ground) and I've definitely not babied those knives at all.
Still work well and lock up tight.

Hope that helps...

Regards,
Mike

Strider/BUCK Great knives for the $$$. I have a mini Tanto that hopfully I will retire with a BUCK/TOP's IF they make a folder.

If you want a "tactical" Buck knife the SB is the only way to go. I have a 889 factory blem that I carry as an EDC here in Iraq and have at least one of each of the other SB folders. Its a good knife and perfect for what I want it to do. I carried an 880SP folder my last tour and like it a lot to, I just think the 889 carries better in an ACU pocket. I also like the Tarani SB's because Steve Taraini and my FMA instructor trained under PG Edgar togther, of course that has no bearing on the quality of the product. I also have 8 actual Striders and I think Buck did a great job on the Strider/Buck collaborations. IMO they were the best production combat/utlity knives available.

Colt, My son sent me a photo of himself last week, standing by the pool in Balad. He's been carrying an 882 Tarani while deployed, tells me it's serving him well. I've been carrying mine daily for over a year now. Chuck Buck was nice enough to sign it for me last April at the show in Oregon.

I have 2 of the 889's will continue to buy most likely several of the 882 and mod them to remove the serrations. Great bang for the Buck(LOL).

Was just there a couple days ago. Now that we are getting ready to rotate home we have some time to visit the pool. My guys have been going every day for a week and finally talked me into going. Was a bit of a Zoo. Dont know why they get such a kick from throwing their platoon sergeant in the pool but they do.

I was thinking of having Chuck and CJ sign mine too when I get home, maybe at the next factory sale.
