Hi All,

I would like some advise on the Buck Striders, I think they are quite attractive knives (never handed one) and I would like how do they compare with their original counterparts and if they are worth their remarkable prices .

If you haven't yet, you'll want to run a search for "strider" but specifically limited to the "Buck Knives" sub-Forum.

Lots of good info there.

I have one right infront of me. It is a large tanto. I love these knives. I find that many knives out there aren't really designed for human hands! Take most SAKs for example. Awesome knives for sure, but look at the "handle". Now compare that with a handle on other tools: say a shovel or a hammer. See the difference? So I love Buck/Striders because the handles are thick and wide. They fit your hand very well. People often comment that the Buck/Striders are big and heavy, but that is in comparison with Benchmade Osbornes and Spyderco Enduras. Compared to other tools, these knives are the right size!

The lock-up on mine is solid. The locking liner is something like .08 inches, very very thick comapred to most (all?) other production liner locks. OI also find the handle to be quite rigid. I liek to squeeze and twist my folders to see how much the handle will flex and how the lock distorts. My Buck/Strider has very very very little flex.

Recently these knives were improved. They now come with double thumb studs, smoother handle scales, a diferent wsher set-up, and the locking end of the ti liner is heat treated to make it harder. All of these improvements make the Buck/Strider folders one fo the best production deals going around. Right now I am trying to decide whether I should save for a Buck/Strider spearpoint, or save for a Strider AR, or the MARSOC. What makes the decision tough is that the Buck/Striders are such good deals! I heard one forumite descibe the Buck/Strider spearpoint as being 2/3 of a Strider AR, at 1/3 the price.

For utility usage I'd suggest the Spearpoint over the Tanto. I love my tanto, but if I could only have one, I'd take the spear point.

Good luck!

I'm in agreement with what Crayola said about them. They are very solid knives and the spear point is my choice. If you like robust folders that you can beat the heck out of, the Buck Strider is the one to get.

check out the new tarani buck-strider, supposed to come out early in 2004. Going for $119.00 on OSKS. Looks like another gotta get for me.

I got a Buck Strider thinking it was a great deal on a Strider Strider (long time ago). The Buck Strider is HUGE. It has the tanto tip that is so thick it is hard to cut anything with it. If I was like a brick mason or something it would be my EDC. I would have no problem using it as a chistle or hammer. It may do more damage in self defense hitting someone with it like a club instead of stabbing them. One of these days I may re-profile the tip to make it more functionable, perhaps the Spear Point works better.

They are great knives. I had a mini-tanto, and the thing was very solid.

I'd like to have some of the Strider EB fixed series, but that is a tad expensive for right now. I would take a 'Solution' in a heartbeat and never worry about strength.

The 882, aka Buck-Strider Tarani SB4.T, is not known to be as "strong" as its other current Buck-Strider line-mates.

Before you purchase, I would recommend that you again search for threads here on BF as well as external *_independent_* (in. non-retail or Buck-linked) enthusiast reviews of this model.

There are several very informative threads in the Buck sub-Forum which anyone planning the purchase of this model should research and read.

It is a very purpose-driven folder, if it matches your usage, you'll be very happy with it -- but if your expectations are misplaced, you'll immediately want to get rid of it.

Bruz,

The tanto tip won the Strider was designed for point strength, not as a cutter. I have used mine to poke and dig with, as well as scrape with. Also, the Buck/Strider would do a heck of a lot more damage on a stab than many other folders. With the width and thickness of the blade, that is one heck of a wound channel that would be created. As you suggest though, maybe the spear point would be better for your needs. I often pair my Buck Strider up with a Swiss Army or a stockman, so I have many bases covered with that pairing.

As a side note, in my usage I have never replicated the failure that Cliff found with my Buck Strider, let alone in any of my folders.

No mention thus far has been made of the fixed blade "Solution." (Mod. 888?) I have one in BG-42. Fit and finish were first-rate. Scary sharp right out of the box. Built like a tank.

I agree 100% Crayola, if I needed a digger or a scrapper it would top my list...it is the only knife I own that I would not hesitate to open a can of beans with!

I had one of the older tanto model and was not thrilled with it. It was a folding pry bar. The new smoother handle scales would have saved a few pairs of my pants from wearing around the pocket and waste band. My knife had blade play that could not be corrected without sending it back to the factory.

The Mini-Strider spear point looks like a knife that I could take a hankering to. I find I don't care as much for big honkin folders as I used to.

Here is a photo of the Buck-Strider Tarani SB4.T taken from the TAD Gear site.

I know that if it's done right it doesn't matter but I picked one up at the NYCKS show and the liner lock is crazy thin. Why the change? I hope that futre B/S collaborations continue to focus on the reason that they got such a tough reputaion and not just rely on the reputation.

I have used my Strider for things that I would never use another knife for (I believe someone mentioned a pry-bar earlier...) and it merely looks like I happen to use it. Besides losing a screw (which Buck Knives graciously sent me a bag of for nothing) while attempting to de-limb a small tree, it has never had any problems. I would definitely recommend the spear point, it's simply more useful for EDC. If, of course you use it as one; it can be rather conspicuous.:)
