Buck three spring question

I've had a three spring 301 for a while now and love it. The springs could be a little stronger and I prefer ffg....but otherwise I really like the blade.

After hearing several folks recommend the 303, I decided to get one. It showed up a couple weeks ago and really like the little guy.

The knife came with one very minor flaw and was hoping to get some thoughts on what to do. I'm hoping I can take care of it myself with out sending it back, but want some more experienced thoughts before I did any thing.

On the back springs, one of them isn't quite flush with the other two....leaving a slight spring edge protruding. My 301's back springs are perfectly flush.

So has any one experienced this before?

I was thinking about using my work sharp to very lightly sand it flush....but I'm a little nervous about damaging the springs. Or I could just use some fine sand paper by hand to soften the edge.

The spring is really only barely out of place, but since it was designed to be flush...the edge is very sharp and easily felt.

Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks, Jim

I've had a couple of knives like that over the years. I just soften the edge if it's enough to bother me.

It is pretty common - the only folks in the world who worry about springs being perfectly flush (in all blade positions) are us right here (and that in recent years)! I have a decent collection of Case jack knives from the 1970's - several have much more spring protrusion than we would find acceptable today - all function perfectly and most snap like gator's. A slight misalignment of the springs is not abnormal. Of course I'm pretty forgiving of minor variations in other folks knives. OH

I recently had this exact problem (amongst other issues) on a 303 that I received several months ago. A couple of days ago I pulled it out of the drawer, re-profiled the edges and sharpened up and stropped the blades and then gently took the sharp corners off the spring that was proud using the fine side of an emery board. I'm happy enough with it now. :)
