Found a good deal one one of these (50+% off) but I am unsure which steel this knife has. Buck website says 154CM, online dealers say 420HC, and according to some the early models had ATS-34. Is there a way of telling which steel a particular knife has when dealing with the collaborations?

Anything other than 420HC is usually stamped on the blade.

As far as I know, the CSAR-T w/ 154CM or ATS34 had the high traction "Rocky Mountain Tread" G10 scales. The "Avid" or 420HC model had smooth scales.

Also, the 154CM is #095 while the 420HC is #090. Had to get home to see mine. There's a 090 Avid in the classifieds here.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Are you referring to the model number like 690? If so Buck list the 690 on their website as 154cm and makes no mention of 420hc. After talking to the dealer all 3 were said to be 420hc with Rocky Mountain tread.

Buck per their site and some reviews list the model 690 fixed blade as 154CM. It appears their a few differnt variations of the 690 floating around like a 690 with RM tread handle and 420HC steel (such as the three at the local B&M store where I was looking). I guess it does not matter now since I was wanting a 154CM version and not a 420HC.

I own one myself, and can say that it is 154cm

Buck emailed me and said they changed steel in 2014 to 154CM and any model made since then are in fact 154CM. Might talk to the B&M store and see if they can recheck their stock. Sure would be nice to pick up 3 for less than $83.00 each.
