Read an old thread where someone asked about who made the old(90s) black handled sawcut 312 & 314 trappers. Answer given was that while Camillus made most of the Bucks back then the 312 & 314 were made by Buck. Maybe so but I recently acquired a Camillus trapper that is identical to the Buck 314 except for the shield & tang stamping, which is " camillus". Seems odd that Camillus would produce an identical knife if they were not making the Bucks.

Several of the 300 series Buck knives are very similar to the Camillus made because they were contract knives made for Buck. The Schrade made were also very similar in design because they were before the Camillus contract. There’s other name brand knives that are very similar with their shield, markings and name being the only difference. That is very common in the traditional knife patterns some are over 100 years old designs.

You should check out the Buck knives sub forum. There’s a lot of information and history listed there not to mention many Buck experts.
